BNB Chain Appoints Thomas Chen as Chief Business Officer to Drive Institutional Growth

BNB Chain has appointed Thomas Chen, former BitGo executive and Function CEO, as Chief Business Officer. Chen will lead revenue strategy, institutional partnerships, and ecosystem value across stablecoins, trading, and capital markets—signaling a deeper push into institutional adoption.

BNB Chain Taps Former BitGo Executive to Lead Commercial Strategy

BNB Chain has named Thomas Chen as its new Chief Business Officer, a strategic hire aimed at accelerating revenue growth, deepening institutional partnerships, and building long-term ecosystem value. Chen brings over seven years of experience in digital asset infrastructure, having previously served as CEO of Function and, before that, as Managing Director and Global Head of Sales at BitGo.

His mandate spans four core areas: institutional and capital markets, stablecoins and settlement, trading and liquidity, and ecosystem and distribution. This broad remit signals BNB Chain’s intent to evolve beyond its retail-centric roots into a full-stack blockchain network capable of servicing banks, asset managers, and fintechs.

Why This Matters: Institutional Push Intensifies

BNB Chain has long been one of the most active smart contract platforms by transaction volume and active users, but its institutional footprint has lagged behind competitors like Ethereum and newer entrants such as Avalanche and Polygon. Chen’s hire is a clear signal that the network is prioritizing enterprise-grade solutions—particularly in stablecoin settlement and tokenized asset infrastructure.

The timing is notable. Global regulators are increasingly providing clarity on digital asset custody and settlement, and traditional financial institutions are actively seeking blockchain rails that offer scalability, low fees, and regulatory compatibility. BNB Chain, with its high throughput and low transaction costs, is well-positioned to capture this demand—if it can build the right institutional relationships.

Stablecoins and Settlement: A Key Battleground

Chen’s focus on stablecoins and settlement is particularly telling. Stablecoins have become the de facto settlement layer for crypto-native and increasingly traditional finance flows. BNB Chain already hosts a significant share of stablecoin activity, but competition is fierce. By bringing in a seasoned sales and business development leader with deep custody and infrastructure experience, BNB Chain is signaling that it wants to be the preferred chain for stablecoin issuance, redemption, and institutional settlement.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Chen’s appointment is unlikely to yield immediate, visible results—institutional sales cycles are long, and building trust with regulated entities takes time. However, it represents a necessary structural investment. If BNB Chain can leverage Chen’s network and expertise to onboard even a handful of major custodians, payment processors, or asset managers, it could meaningfully shift its competitive positioning.

The broader takeaway for the industry is that Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks are no longer competing solely on technology. Business development, regulatory engagement, and institutional relationships are becoming equally important. BNB Chain’s move reflects a maturing market where commercial execution matters as much as technical innovation.
