Fiserv Launches Digital Asset Platform with North Dakota’s Roughrider Coin

Fiserv has launched its digital asset platform, debuting with North Dakota's Roughrider Coin—a USD-backed stablecoin on Solana. The move signals growing convergence between traditional banking and blockchain settlement, with over 90 banks and credit unions set to use the token for interbank transfers.

Fiserv’s Digital Asset Platform Goes Live

Fiserv, a global payments and financial technology provider, has officially launched its digital asset platform for financial institution clients. The first live deployment is Roughrider Coin, a USD-backed stablecoin issued for the Bank of North Dakota. The coin is issued, custodied, and managed by VersaBank, with Fireblocks supplying digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services. Transactions settle on the Solana blockchain.

Interbank Transfers for North Dakota’s Financial Network

Roughrider Coin will integrate with Fiserv’s Commercial Center system, enabling interbank fund transfers for more than 90 participating banks and credit unions across North Dakota. This marks a significant step in bringing stablecoin-based settlement to community financial institutions, potentially reducing reliance on traditional correspondent banking rails and lowering transaction costs.

Beyond Stablecoins: A Broader Digital Asset Suite

The platform also supports a range of applications including stablecoin cards, cross-border payments, programmable commerce, treasury management automation, and tokenized deposits. This breadth suggests Fiserv is positioning itself as a full-stack infrastructure provider for banks seeking to offer digital asset services without building the technology in-house.

Industry Implications

  • TradFi meets DeFi: The involvement of established players like Fiserv, VersaBank, and Fireblocks underscores the accelerating convergence of traditional finance and blockchain-based settlement.
  • Solana’s enterprise appeal: Choosing Solana for transaction processing highlights the network’s growing reputation for high-throughput, low-cost institutional use cases.
  • Stablecoin regulation tailwinds: With U.S. stablecoin legislation advancing, bank-issued tokens like Roughrider Coin could become a template for compliant digital dollar infrastructure.

Forward Look

If successful, the Fiserv platform could catalyze similar deployments across other U.S. states and community banking networks. The key will be whether these bank-issued stablecoins can achieve meaningful transaction volume and interoperability with broader payment ecosystems. As regulatory clarity improves, expect more regional banks to explore tokenized deposit and stablecoin offerings, potentially reshaping the plumbing of domestic and cross-border payments.
