NEAR Intents Hits Record Fee Revenue as Privacy-First Perp Trading Gains Traction

NEAR Intents recorded its highest monthly fee revenue of the year in September, driven by a privacy-first default for Hyperliquid perpetual trading. Confidential balances topped $70 million on day one, signaling that demand for private, cross-chain derivatives access may be converting into real usage.

NEAR Intents Posts Year-High Fee Revenue in September

NEAR’s intent-based trading layer, NEAR Intents, recorded its highest monthly fee revenue of the year in September. The surge coincides with a strategic move by NEAR to enable privacy mode by default for perpetual contract trading on Hyperliquid, the high-performance decentralized derivatives exchange.

The mechanism works through NEAR Intents’ cross-chain token swaps: users deposit funds from other chains and route them into trading activity, with confidential balances surpassing $70 million on the first day the privacy feature went live. That figure is being read as an early signal that latent demand for private, cross-chain derivatives access is converting into genuine usage.

Why Privacy Changes the Economics of Perp Trading

Perpetual futures are the highest-volume product in decentralized finance, but they have historically been fully transparent. Every position, margin call, and liquidation is visible on-chain, which exposes traders to front-running, copy-trading, and predatory liquidation hunting.

  • Behavioral shift: When positions are private, traders tend to keep capital parked in the system between trades rather than withdrawing, raising sticky balances and fee generation.
  • Cross-chain stickiness: NEAR Intents abstracts away bridging complexity, letting capital from Ethereum, Solana, and other ecosystems settle into a single trading environment.
  • Fee capture: Intent-based routing turns NEAR into a fee-taking intermediary rather than just a settlement layer, which is precisely what drove September’s revenue record.

The Broader Intent Economy

NEAR Intents reflects a wider industry pivot toward intent-centric architecture, where users declare an outcome and solvers compete to execute it. This model is spreading across DeFi, from swap aggregation to cross-chain bridging and now derivatives. If confidential balances keep growing, NEAR could position itself as the privacy and routing layer for on-chain perps, a niche that competitors like dYdX and Hyperliquid’s native order books have not fully occupied.

What to Watch

The key question is whether September’s record is a durable trend or a one-off spike tied to launch incentives. Watch three metrics: sustained confidential balance growth, retention of depositors beyond the first month, and whether fee revenue holds without promotional subsidies. If those hold, intent-based privacy could become a standard expectation for sophisticated on-chain traders rather than a novelty feature.
