Kraken’s Payward Partners with Singapore Gulf Bank for 24/7 Institutional Settlement

Payward, Kraken's parent company, has partnered with Singapore Gulf Bank to offer 24/7 institutional settlement via SGB Net. The move enhances fiat-crypto connectivity in Asia and the Gulf, signaling deeper TradFi-DeFi convergence.

Kraken Parent Payward Integrates with Singapore Gulf Bank’s SGB Net

Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, has entered a strategic partnership with Singapore Gulf Bank (SGB), a licensed digital bank regulated by the Central Bank of Bahrain. Under the agreement, Payward has connected to SGB’s real-time multi-currency clearing network, SGB Net, to provide round-the-clock settlement for institutional digital asset markets across Asia and the Gulf region.

Bridging Traditional Finance and Digital Assets

The collaboration marks a significant step in the convergence of traditional banking infrastructure and digital asset trading. SGB Net enables instant, 24/7 settlement in multiple fiat currencies, a critical requirement for institutional traders who operate around the clock but have historically been constrained by banking hours and legacy settlement systems.

By plugging into SGB’s network, Kraken’s institutional clients can now move funds seamlessly between traditional bank accounts and the exchange, reducing counterparty risk and improving capital efficiency. This is particularly important in the Gulf region, where regulatory clarity and pro-innovation policies are attracting global crypto players.

Implications for Institutional Adoption

The partnership underscores a broader trend: crypto exchanges are increasingly seeking regulated banking partners to offer fiat on-ramps and off-ramps that meet institutional standards. The Middle East, with its progressive regulatory frameworks such as Bahrain’s crypto asset regulations, is emerging as a hub for such collaborations.

  • Enhanced liquidity: 24/7 settlement reduces friction and allows for faster arbitrage and market-making.
  • Regulatory compliance: Both entities operate under established regulatory oversight, providing comfort to institutional investors.
  • Geographic expansion: The deal strengthens Kraken’s presence in Asia and the Gulf, regions with growing crypto demand.

For SGB, the partnership validates its strategy of building a digital-first bank that caters to the crypto industry. It also positions the bank as a key infrastructure provider in the evolving digital asset ecosystem.

Forward-Looking Perspective

As institutional demand for digital assets grows, the need for robust, real-time settlement solutions will only intensify. This partnership could serve as a blueprint for other exchanges and banks looking to collaborate. If successful, it may accelerate the adoption of blockchain-based settlement systems in traditional finance, further blurring the lines between TradFi and DeFi.

However, challenges remain, including cross-border regulatory harmonization and the need for interoperability between different settlement networks. How Payward and SGB navigate these issues will be closely watched by the industry.
