Ethereum ETFs Bleed $202M in Sixth Straight Day of Outflows as Bitcoin Funds Attract Fresh Capital

US spot Ethereum ETFs saw $201.9 million in outflows on October 6, the largest daily withdrawal in three weeks and a sixth straight day of losses, while Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $118.9 million. The divergence highlights institutional preference for BTC and structural handicaps facing ETH funds, including the lack of staking rewards.

Ethereum ETF Outflows Hit Three-Week High

US spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds recorded $201.9 million in net outflows on October 6, the largest single-day withdrawal since mid-September and the sixth consecutive session of negative flows. The streak stands in sharp contrast to spot Bitcoin ETFs, which attracted $118.9 million in net inflows on the same day, underscoring a widening divergence in investor appetite between the two largest digital assets.

Notably, ETH’s spot price held relatively steady for most of the outflow streak, suggesting the selling pressure has been absorbed by buyers in the broader market rather than triggering a sharp repricing. That resilience, however, may be tested if redemptions persist.

Why the Divergence Matters

The persistent gap between BTC and ETH fund flows reflects several structural factors:

  • Institutional preference for Bitcoin: Allocators continue to treat BTC as the primary digital store-of-value exposure, with Ethereum viewed as a higher-beta, more complex bet on smart-contract adoption.
  • Staking yield gap: Spot ETH ETFs in the US cannot yet offer staking rewards, removing a key differentiator that could otherwise attract yield-sensitive capital.
  • Rotation into other narratives: Some capital appears to be rotating toward Bitcoin, tokenized real-world assets, and AI-adjacent crypto infrastructure, leaving ETH ETFs on the back foot.

Ecosystem Fundamentals vs. Fund Flows

Fund flows are not a perfect proxy for network health. Ethereum’s layer-2 ecosystem continues to expand, blob throughput has improved, and stablecoin issuance on the network remains dominant. Yet ETF flows are one of the few transparent, high-frequency signals of institutional sentiment, and right now that signal is negative.

The absence of staking within US spot ETH ETFs remains a structural handicap. Until regulators allow staking features — or issuers find a workaround via affiliated products — the funds are effectively competing with a stripped-down version of ETH exposure, while offshore products and direct custody offer yield.

What to Watch Next

Three catalysts could shift the trajectory:

  • Flow reversal: A single strong inflow day would break the psychological streak and could signal that sellers are exhausted.
  • Regulatory clarity on staking: Any movement toward permitting staking in ETFs would materially change the product’s appeal.
  • Macro backdrop: Rate expectations and risk appetite will continue to dominate short-term flows across all crypto ETFs.

For now, the data paints a clear picture: institutions are favoring Bitcoin, and Ethereum ETFs are under pressure. How long ETH’s price can hold up without fund support is the key question heading into the next reporting window.
