Firelight Launches Built-In DeFi Vault Protection, Starting With Sentora

Firelight has launched embedded protection for DeFi vaults, beginning with Sentora's USD Protected Vault and Protected RWA Vaults. The move shifts risk coverage from a per-depositor purchase to a native vault feature, potentially reshaping how onchain yield products compete on risk-adjusted returns.

Firelight Brings Embedded Coverage to Onchain Yield Vaults

Firelight, an onchain cover-enablement protocol for decentralized finance, has gone live with a protection layer that is embedded directly into DeFi vaults rather than purchased separately by each depositor. The initial rollout covers Sentora’s USD Protected Vault and its Protected Real World Asset (RWA) vaults, marking one of the first attempts to make risk coverage a native feature of yield-bearing onchain products.

From DIY Insurance to Default Protection

Until now, the dominant model has been fragmented: depositors hunting yield were expected to independently research, select, and buy cover from separate protocols, often after capital was already deployed. That friction left most DeFi users unhedged, even as exploits, oracle failures, and smart contract bugs continued to drain hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Firelight’s approach flips that workflow. By integrating protection at the vault level, coverage becomes part of the product itself, not an optional add-on. Sentora’s vaults serve as the proving ground, pairing yield generation with an embedded safety net for both stablecoin-denominated strategies and tokenized real world assets.

Why This Matters for the RWA and Yield Narrative

The timing is significant. Onchain yield has moved mainstream, with tokenized treasuries, private credit, and structured products attracting institutional and retail capital alike. But that growth has outpaced the development of risk infrastructure. For allocators accustomed to custodial safeguards and regulated insurance in traditional finance, the absence of comparable protection has been a persistent objection.

  • Composability: Protection baked into vaults can be inherited by downstream protocols that build on top of them.
  • Transparency: Embedded cover makes the cost of risk explicit in yield figures rather than hidden in separate policies.
  • Scalability: Removing per-user underwriting decisions could accelerate deposits into RWA and stablecoin vaults.

What to Watch Next

Firelight’s model will be tested on two fronts: whether the pricing of embedded protection remains sustainable during stress events, and whether other vault curators adopt the standard. If coverage becomes a default expectation, it could reshape how DeFi protocols compete — not just on headline APY, but on risk-adjusted returns. The broader implication is that DeFi’s maturation may depend less on novel yield sources and more on the unglamorous plumbing of insurance, underwriting, and capital efficiency.

For now, Firelight and Sentora have planted a flag: protection is no longer an afterthought in onchain yield. It is becoming part of the product.
