Polychain Leads $2B Round for Network School as Balaji’s Network State Thesis Draws a16z, Coinbase

Polychain Capital is leading a new funding round for Network School at a $2 billion valuation, with a16z, Coinbase and Balaji Srinivasan participating. The deal signals that the network state thesis is being underwritten as an investable crypto category rather than a thought experiment.

Polychain Leads Network School Round at $2 Billion Valuation

Polychain Capital is leading a new funding round for Network School at a $2 billion valuation, founder and CEO Olaf Carlson-Wee announced at the Network State gathering. Andreessen Horowitz, Coinbase and Balaji Srinivasan are among the institutional and individual participants. The specific amount raised was not disclosed.

Carlson-Wee framed the investment in terms of Polychain’s broader thesis: rather than backing incremental improvements, the firm looks for projects using new business models or technologies to solve problems in fundamentally different ways. He noted a relationship and collaboration with Balaji spanning more than a decade.

Why This Matters

Network School sits at the intersection of two narratives that have quietly merged over the past two years: the network state movement and the tokenization of real-world economic activity. Balaji’s original framing — communities that begin online, accumulate capital and talent, then negotiate physical sovereignty — was long treated as speculative futurism. A $2 billion valuation led by one of crypto’s most established venture firms, with a16z and Coinbase participating, suggests the thesis is now being underwritten as an investable category rather than an intellectual exercise.

The mechanics are what make this relevant to crypto markets. Network School-style communities typically rely on tokenized membership, on-chain governance, digital identity primitives and crypto-native payment rails to coordinate members across jurisdictions. If these communities scale, they become demand centers for wallets, stablecoin infrastructure, identity protocols and compliance tooling — precisely the stack that Coinbase and a16z portfolio companies build.

The Venture Signal

  • Polychain’s positioning: The firm has increasingly favored infrastructure and coordination-layer bets over application-layer tokens, and Network School fits that pattern.
  • a16z’s continued crypto appetite: Participation signals that tier-one venture capital still sees pre-product, narrative-heavy crypto bets as asymmetric.
  • Coinbase’s strategic interest: An exchange investing in a community framework implies a long-term view on where crypto users will originate, not just where they trade.

Risks and Open Questions

The obvious challenge is that network states remain largely unproven at scale. Legal recognition, taxation, member retention and the gap between digital community and physical jurisdiction are unresolved. A $2 billion valuation for an entity with undisclosed revenue implies significant execution risk and heavy reliance on narrative momentum.

There is also a valuation-discipline question. Crypto venture has re-rated sharply since 2021, and large headline numbers for early-stage coordination projects invite skepticism about whether capital is chasing thesis or traction.

Forward Look

Watch for three signals: whether Network School discloses token or membership economics, whether other network-state projects attract comparable venture backing, and whether regulators in friendly jurisdictions begin creating frameworks that make such communities legally legible. If those pieces align, the network state moves from conference keynote to market structure. If they stall, this round will be remembered as a narrative trade.
