Hyperliquid Tops $1.4B in Cumulative Revenue, Captures 56% of On-Chain Perp Market

Hyperliquid has crossed $1.4 billion in cumulative protocol revenue and spent over $1.26 billion buying back HYPE, while controlling more than 56% of on-chain perpetual open interest. The milestone underscores a self-reinforcing fee-and-buyback flywheel — and raises questions about single-venue concentration risk in decentralized derivatives.

Hyperliquid’s Revenue Milestone Reshapes On-Chain Derivatives Landscape

Hyperliquid has surpassed $1.4 billion in cumulative protocol revenue, with more than $1.26 billion deployed toward open-market buybacks of its native HYPE token, according to a new on-chain perpetual futures market study from Castle Labs. By open interest, the decentralized exchange now commands over 56% of the on-chain perpetuals sector — a concentration that makes it the dominant venue in a market once fragmented across dozens of competing protocols.

A Flywheel Built on Fees and Buybacks

The numbers reveal a self-reinforcing economic loop. Trading fees generated by Hyperliquid’s order-book-style perpetual venue flow into a transparent buyback program that absorbs HYPE from the open market, reducing circulating supply while signaling confidence to holders. That mechanism has now channeled roughly nine dollars of buyback for every ten dollars of cumulative revenue — an unusually aggressive capital-return ratio for a DeFi protocol.

  • Cumulative protocol revenue: over $1.4 billion
  • Cumulative HYPE buybacks: over $1.26 billion
  • Share of on-chain perpetual open interest: above 56%

Why the Concentration Matters

Hyperliquid’s rise reflects a broader shift in derivatives trading away from centralized exchanges and toward fully on-chain venues with comparable latency and depth. Its custom Layer 1 architecture allows order matching and settlement to occur without the gas costs that historically crippled on-chain order books. Competitors such as dYdX, GMX, and newer entrants have ceded ground as liquidity migrates to the deepest pool.

The buyback program also introduces a governance and treasury dimension. Large-scale repurchases concentrate influence among long-term holders and reduce the float available to speculators, which can amplify both upside and downside volatility. For institutional participants evaluating on-chain derivatives, the key questions are no longer whether the technology works, but whether a single venue’s dominance creates systemic risk.

Forward Outlook

With revenue compounding and buybacks running at scale, Hyperliquid enters a phase where sustainability — not growth — becomes the central test. Fee compression from rivals, potential regulatory scrutiny of token buybacks as de facto dividends, and the risk of a single-venue liquidity shock are the variables to watch. If the protocol maintains its open-interest share through the next market cycle, it will have cemented itself as the reference venue for on-chain perpetuals and a template for how DeFi protocols return value to token holders.
