Tokenized Assets Hit $39.1B as Yield-Bearing Products Dominate 61% of Market

The tokenized asset market has reached $39.1 billion, with U.S. Treasuries, money market funds, and corporate loans comprising 61% of the total. While tokenization lowers investment barriers, regulatory and structural constraints still limit access, especially for equities and funds.

Tokenized Asset Market Reaches $39.1 Billion

The tokenized asset market has grown to approximately $39.1 billion as of early September 2026, the financial research arm of South Korean fintech platform Toss. The report, titled “DeFi and Tokenized Assets: Connecting Traditional and On-Chain Finance,” highlights that yield-bearing credit products—including U.S. Treasuries, money market funds, and corporate loans—account for roughly 61% of the total market.

Credit Products Lead the Charge

The dominance of credit-based tokenized products underscores a clear market preference for stability and collateral utility. Tokenized U.S. Treasuries and money market funds offer investors on-chain exposure to low-risk, yield-generating instruments that can also serve as collateral in DeFi protocols. Corporate loans, while carrying higher risk, provide attractive yields in a low-rate environment.

“The market is currently concentrated in products with stable yields and easy collateralization,” the report notes. This trend reflects the maturing infrastructure around tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), where composability with DeFi lending markets is a key value proposition.

Access Barriers Persist

Despite the promise of democratizing access, tokenization does not automatically eliminate investment barriers. The report points out that product structures and regulatory frameworks still impose significant restrictions. For instance, most tokenized U.S. equities use a contract-for-difference (CFD) structure, meaning investors do not actually hold the underlying shares. Similarly, tokenized Treasuries and funds are often limited to accredited investors only.

These limitations raise questions about the true inclusivity of tokenized assets. While blockchain technology can reduce minimum investment thresholds and enable fractional ownership, regulatory compliance—such as KYC/AML requirements and securities laws—continues to gate access.

Implications for TradFi-DeFi Convergence

The $39.1 billion market size signals growing institutional interest in blockchain-based financial products. Major asset managers and fintech firms are increasingly exploring tokenization as a way to tap into 24/7 global liquidity and programmable finance. However, the concentration in credit products suggests that the market is still in an early phase, with equity and alternative assets yet to gain significant traction.

For DeFi protocols, tokenized credit products offer a bridge to real-world yield, potentially stabilizing on-chain lending markets that have historically been volatile. Yet, the reliance on centralized issuers and custodians introduces counterparty risks that pure DeFi enthusiasts may find uncomfortable.

Forward Look

As regulatory clarity improves—particularly in jurisdictions like the EU with MiCA and the U.S. with evolving SEC guidance—the tokenized asset market could expand beyond credit products into equities, real estate, and commodities. The key challenge will be balancing innovation with investor protection. If the industry can address access restrictions and standardize legal frameworks, tokenization could genuinely democratize finance. Until then, the market will likely remain dominated by yield-focused, institution-friendly products.
