Crypto Liquidations Hit $222M in 24 Hours as Longs Bear the Brunt

Over $222 million in crypto liquidations occurred in the last 24 hours, with longs taking a 72.3% hit. Bitcoin and Ethereum led the losses, and Binance accounted for nearly half of all liquidations.

Market-Wide Liquidations Surpass $222 Million

In the past 24 hours, the cryptocurrency market witnessed a total of $222 million in liquidations, with long positions accounting for the majority. Long liquidations reached $160 million, representing 72.3% of the total, while short liquidations amounted to $61.44 million. A staggering 71,183 traders were liquidated across various exchanges.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Lead the Losses

Bitcoin (BTC) saw approximately $43.52 million in liquidations, with longs contributing $36.39 million and shorts $7.14 million. Ethereum (ETH) followed with $36.32 million in liquidations, where longs made up $27.55 million and shorts $8.78 million. Other notable assets included Solana (SOL) with $9.19 million in liquidations, Zcash (ZEC) with $8.80 million, and CL with $7.65 million—notably, CL’s liquidations were almost entirely from shorts ($7.64 million).

Binance dominated the liquidation landscape, accounting for 47.7% of the total. The largest single liquidation occurred on Hyperliquid’s BTC-USD trading pair, where a $5.10 million long position was wiped out at a price of $81,122.00.

Analysis: Why Longs Are Feeling the Pain

The heavy skew towards long liquidations suggests that traders were overly optimistic, likely expecting a continued rally. However, a sudden price drop caught them off guard, triggering a cascade of margin calls. This pattern is common in leveraged markets where sentiment becomes one-sided. The concentration on Binance highlights its dominant role in retail trading and the importance of risk management.

Moreover, the diversity of assets liquidated—from major caps like BTC and ETH to smaller ones like ZEC and NEAR—indicates that the pullback was broad-based, affecting multiple sectors of the crypto market. The CL anomaly, where shorts were liquidated, might point to a specific event or low liquidity in that pair.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Such liquidation events often mark local bottoms or tops, depending on the broader trend. With longs getting flushed out, the market may have reset leverage, potentially paving the way for a more sustainable move. However, traders should remain cautious as volatility persists. The high proportion of long liquidations could also signal a shift in sentiment, with bears gaining temporary control. Keep an eye on funding rates and open interest to gauge the next directional move.
