Polygon CDK Besu Bridges Bank Private Chains to Ethereum Liquidity

Polygon has launched CDK Besu, a modular solution that lets banks run permissioned Hyperledger Besu networks while connecting to Ethereum mainnet and Agglayer liquidity via zero-knowledge proofs. The move aims to break the liquidity silos that have isolated traditional finance consortium chains from DeFi.

Polygon Launches CDK Besu to Connect Bank Private Chains to Ethereum

Polygon has unveiled Polygon CDK Besu, a modular solution that allows banks and traditional financial institutions to deploy permissioned Hyperledger Besu networks while connecting directly to Ethereum mainnet and the Agglayer shared liquidity ecosystem. The announcement targets a long-standing pain point: private consortium chains built by banks, exchanges, and payment providers have remained isolated from public DeFi liquidity due to regulatory, privacy, and interoperability constraints.

The Consortium Chain Isolation Problem

For nearly a decade, financial institutions have favored Hyperledger Besu—an enterprise-grade, EVM-compatible client—to build permissioned networks using consensus protocols such as Istanbul BFT or QBFT. These systems offer the control and privacy that regulators demand, but they also create liquidity silos. Banks cannot place core transaction data or customer ledgers on public blockchains, and fragmented private chains lack secure cross-chain relays. As a result, settlement funds become trapped, unable to interact with the growing pool of on-chain liquidity.

Zero-Knowledge Proofs Decouple Privacy from Settlement

Polygon CDK Besu addresses this by separating transaction privacy from asset settlement verification using zero-knowledge proofs. Institutions retain full control over validator membership, smart contract permissions, and network governance. Sensitive data—high-frequency payments, securities settlements, or fiat-collateralized transactions—remains on local private clouds or hosted nodes and is never broadcast to a public chain. When assets or tokenized real-world assets need to move to another network, the system generates a zero-knowledge state transition proof. That proof is submitted via the Agglayer to Ethereum mainnet for instant verification and final settlement.

This design lets institutions preserve commercial confidentiality and regulatory compliance while giving tokenized assets immediate access to Ethereum’s security and settlement guarantees—without relying on trusted intermediaries.

Low-Friction Upgrade for Existing Besu Deployments

The solution’s backward compatibility is a major draw. Dozens of top financial institutions already run Hyperledger Besu in production. Traditionally, joining a new scaling network would require rebuilding the entire ledger and smart contract stack, incurring audit, integration, and business interruption costs. Polygon CDK Besu allows existing Besu deployments to connect directly to the Agglayer communication protocol without rewriting application logic, instantly opening interoperability with the broader blockchain ecosystem.

Forward-Looking Perspective

With Ethereum mainnet deployment support now ready, the barriers between institutional private assets and public multi-chain liquidity are being dismantled. If adopted, Polygon CDK Besu could accelerate the convergence of traditional finance and DeFi by letting banks tokenize real-world assets while meeting compliance requirements. The key test will be whether institutions trust zero-knowledge proofs and the Agglayer enough to route material settlement flows through public infrastructure. For now, Polygon has positioned itself as a bridge between two worlds that have long struggled to connect.
