PancakeSwap’s 70% CAKE Cut: Why Its Most Profitable V3 Business Stopped Buybacks and Burns

PancakeSwap's The Flip proposal cuts CAKE emissions by 69% but strips V3 fees from buybacks and burns, redirecting 88% to LPs and 12% to treasury. The move prioritizes liquidity defense over tokenholder value, forcing holders to rethink CAKE's deflation narrative.

PancakeSwap’s 70% CAKE Cut: Why Its Most Profitable V3 Business Stopped Buybacks and Burns

PancakeSwap’s core team, The Kitchen, has submitted a governance proposal called The Flip that would slash CAKE daily emissions from 22,500 to 7,000 tokens—a 69% reduction. While the headline suggests a bullish supply shock, the fine print reveals a deeper restructuring: V3 and Infinity pool fees will no longer fund CAKE buybacks and burns. Instead, liquidity providers (LPs) will receive 88% of fees (up from ~66%), and the remaining 12% will go entirely to the team treasury. The V2 protocol, which still retains a 23% burn mechanism, will be solely responsible for maintaining net deflation.

The Real Shift: From Token Buybacks to Liquidity Defense

This proposal effectively sacrifices CAKE’s direct cash-flow value capture to defend market share. PancakeSwap dominates BSC with ~76% DEX share and ~$23.8 billion in 30-day volume, but aggregators now route orders based on best execution, making liquidity sticky only where yields are highest. By boosting LP rewards to 88%, PancakeSwap is forced into a defensive posture to retain capital and prevent migration to competing chains. In the zero-sum DEX war, platform dominance takes precedence over tokenholder returns.

Implications for CAKE Holders

Holders must abandon the “automatic pump” narrative. With V3 no longer burning tokens, deflation now relies on V2—which could see volume drain to V3 due to superior LP incentives. The 12% treasury allocation and 7,000 daily CAKE to the Pantry fund are intended for ecosystem growth, but without tangible results (e.g., RWA integration, cross-chain expansion), this amounts to dilution. The proposal underscores a broader truth: reducing supply does not guarantee price appreciation, especially when the token no longer captures protocol revenue.

Forward-Looking: What to Watch

  • V2 vs. V3 volume migration: If V2 activity collapses, CAKE burns will stall, undermining the deflationary thesis.
  • Treasury deployment: Can the team generate incremental value exceeding buyback impact? Watch for RWA and cross-chain initiatives.
  • Competitive response: Other DEXs may match LP incentives, eroding PancakeSwap’s edge.

The Flip marks a pivot from token-centric value capture to liquidity-centric defense. For CAKE, the new “deflation” is a static supply cut, not a dynamic cash-flow engine. Investors must reprice accordingly.
