Swell Halts swETH and rswETH Deposits and Withdrawals After NAV Discrepancy Raises Security Concerns

Swell has paused deposits and withdrawals for swETH and rswETH after discovering that contract exchange rates are significantly higher than market prices, raising concerns about a possible key compromise. The protocol assures user funds are safe as it investigates the anomaly.

Swell Freezes Liquid Staking Tokens Amid Pricing Anomaly

Ethereum liquid staking protocol Swell has suspended deposits and withdrawals for its swETH and rswETH tokens after discovering a significant discrepancy between the tokens’ reported net asset value (NAV) and their market prices on decentralized exchanges. The protocol announced the pause on October 24, stating that services will resume once the NAV and exchange rates are corrected. No timeline for restoration was provided, but Swell assured users that funds remain safe.

The contract-reported exchange rates for swETH and rswETH are approximately 1.203 ETH and 1.138 ETH, respectively—about 6% and 5% higher than their previous normal levels. Meanwhile, the tokens are trading at roughly 1.089 WETH and 1.029 WETH on DEXs, a notable discount to their contract value. The anomaly prompted concerns about the integrity of the protocol’s pricing mechanism.

Security Fears Emerge

Blockchain analyst Spreek raised alarms about a potential compromise of the protocol’s administrative keys, identifying a malicious upgrade contract that could affect around 2,500 ETH. However, no evidence suggests the upgrade was executed. Swell confirmed that ETH in the deposit and withdrawal contracts has not been transferred out, and the investigation into the root cause is ongoing.

The incident highlights the critical importance of secure key management in DeFi. If an attacker gains control of upgrade keys, they could potentially drain funds or manipulate contract logic. While Swell’s quick action to pause the contracts may have prevented a worse outcome, the event underscores the risks inherent in upgradeable smart contracts and the need for robust governance and multi-signature safeguards.

Market Implications and Industry Response

The discrepancy between NAV and market price is a red flag for liquid staking derivatives (LSDs). Normally, these tokens should trade close to their underlying ETH value, with small premiums or discounts based on supply and demand. A 5-6% gap suggests that the market is pricing in additional risk—likely the possibility of a smart contract exploit or a loss of confidence in the protocol’s management.

For Swell, the challenge is twofold: fixing the technical issue and restoring trust. The protocol must conduct a thorough audit, potentially upgrade its contracts, and communicate transparently with its community. Competitors in the liquid staking space, such as Lido and Rocket Pool, may benefit if users migrate to perceived safer alternatives. However, the event also serves as a wake-up call for the entire DeFi sector to review their security practices.

Forward Outlook

As the investigation continues, stakeholders will be watching closely for Swell’s next steps. The protocol’s ability to resolve the NAV discrepancy and reassure users will determine its long-term viability. Meanwhile, regulators and auditors may increase scrutiny on liquid staking protocols, emphasizing the need for regular NAV verification and secure key management. For now, users are advised to monitor official channels for updates and avoid trading swETH or rswETH on secondary markets until the situation stabilizes.
