Mochatrade Secures $5.56M to Offer US Stock Perpetuals in India

Mochatrade, a trading platform targeting Indian users, has raised a total of $5.56 million to provide perpetual contracts linked to US stock prices. The seed round was led by CoinFund, with participation from Coinbase Ventures and Zero Knowledge Ventures general partner Nicky Montana. Y Combinator and Pioneer Fund backed a $690,000 pre-seed round, including a $500,000 investment from Y Combinator that arrived earlier this month in USDC on Base.

Bridging Traditional Finance and Crypto in India

The funding highlights growing interest in tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) and synthetic derivatives that offer exposure to traditional markets. Mochatrade’s offering allows Indian users to trade perpetual futures tied to US equities, potentially bypassing restrictions on direct access to US markets. India has a massive retail trading population but faces regulatory hurdles and limited access to global equities, making crypto-based synthetic products an attractive alternative.

CoinFund’s lead investment signals institutional confidence in the convergence of TradFi and DeFi. Coinbase Ventures’ participation further validates the model, given its focus on on-chain finance. The use of USDC on Base for YC’s investment underscores the growing role of stablecoins and Layer 2 networks in venture funding.

Regulatory and Market Implications

While the product could democratize access to US stocks, it also raises regulatory questions. Indian authorities have taken a tough stance on crypto, imposing high taxes and anti-money laundering requirements. Synthetic derivatives tied to foreign equities may fall under securities regulations, and Mochatrade will need to navigate a complex legal landscape. However, the platform’s offshore structure and crypto-native settlement could provide some flexibility.

The broader RWA narrative has gained momentum as investors seek yield and diversification. Tokenized stocks and perpetuals could become a bridge for retail investors in emerging markets to access global assets without traditional brokerage accounts. Mochatrade’s success will depend on its ability to manage liquidity, ensure compliance, and educate users about the risks of leveraged trading.

Forward-Looking Perspective

With fresh capital, Mochatrade plans to expand its product suite and user base. The backing from prominent VCs suggests that crypto-based synthetic equities could be a significant growth area, especially in regions with capital controls. As regulatory frameworks evolve, platforms like Mochatrade may pioneer compliant pathways for global asset access, blurring the lines between traditional and decentralized finance.
