Bitget Wallet Bridges Fiat and Crypto with New Account Numbers
TREE NEWS reports: Bitget Wallet, a self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet, has launched USD and EUR account numbers that allow users to deposit fiat currency via traditional payment rails and automatically convert those deposits into stablecoins. The accounts, provided by payments firm Noah, currently accept ACH, Fedwire, SEPA, and SWIFT transfers. Outbound transfers are expected to be added in a future update.
How It Works
Users of Bitget Wallet can now generate dedicated USD and EUR account details within the wallet. When they send funds from a traditional bank account using supported networks, the deposit is converted into a stablecoin (likely USDC or USDT) and credited to their self-custodial wallet. This eliminates the need for users to manually swap fiat for crypto on a centralized exchange, streamlining the on-ramp process.
The integration with Noah, a payments infrastructure provider, enables the wallet to offer bank-like account numbers without holding user funds directly. This preserves the self-custodial nature of Bitget Wallet while expanding its utility.
Industry Implications
The move reflects a broader trend of crypto wallets and fintech platforms converging with traditional finance to simplify stablecoin adoption. By offering fiat on-ramps directly within a self-custodial environment, Bitget Wallet reduces friction for users who want to hold stablecoins without relying on centralized exchanges.
- Stablecoin growth: Easier fiat-to-stablecoin conversion could accelerate stablecoin usage for payments, remittances, and savings, particularly in regions with limited banking access.
- Self-custody evolution: Wallets are increasingly becoming full-fledged financial hubs, integrating banking-like services while maintaining user control over private keys.
- Regulatory considerations: Such services may attract regulatory scrutiny, as they blur the line between traditional banking and crypto custodianship. Compliance with KYC/AML rules will be critical.
Forward-Looking Perspective
Bitget Wallet’s new feature is a step toward making stablecoins more accessible and usable in everyday finance. As outbound transfers are added, users could potentially move funds seamlessly between fiat and crypto, creating a more integrated financial experience. However, success will depend on regulatory clarity, user adoption, and the ability to maintain security in a self-custodial model. If successful, this could pressure other wallets to follow suit, further bridging the gap between traditional finance and decentralized finance.
