Funding Rates Hit 91st Percentile as 85% of Liquidations Are Shorts Ahead of Fed

Ethereum funding rates flipped positive across six of eight brackets, hitting the 91st percentile of their 90-day range, while 85% of liquidations were shorts. The unusual combination of longs paying to hold and shorts getting squeezed sets up a volatile Fed decision.

Funding Rates Flip Positive Across Ethereum Pairs as Shorts Get Squeezed

On Monday, six of eight Ethereum funding-rate brackets were negative. By Thursday, six were positive — a rapid flip that pushed the aggregate funding rate into the 91st percentile of its 90-day range. Yet the liquidation data tells a counterintuitive story: roughly 85% of recently liquidated positions were shorts, not longs.

This combination — longs paying to hold, but shorts being the ones forcibly closed — is unusual. It suggests a short squeeze is driving price action rather than organic spot demand. When funding flips positive while shorts are liquidated, it often means leveraged bears were caught offside by a rally, and their forced buying pushed funding higher still.

Why the Divergence Matters

Funding rates reflect the cost of holding perpetual futures. Positive funding means longs pay shorts, indicating bullish positioning. But if shorts are the ones being liquidated, it implies the price move was sharp enough to trigger stop-outs before longs could fully crowd in. The result is a market where sentiment looks bullish on paper but the underlying flow is driven by mechanical short-covering.

  • Funding percentile: 91st of 90-day range
  • Liquidation split: ~85% shorts, ~15% longs
  • ETH funding brackets: 6 of 8 positive (up from 2 of 8 on Monday)

This kind of setup can be fragile. If the short-covering exhausts itself and spot demand doesn’t follow through, funding can collapse quickly, forcing late longs to unwind. The 91st percentile is historically a zone where crowded positioning tends to reverse.

Fed Decision Adds a Macro Catalyst

All of this is unfolding hours before the Federal Reserve’s rate decision. Crypto markets have been highly sensitive to Fed communication this year, with funding rates often spiking ahead of the announcement and reversing sharply afterward. A hawkish surprise could hit the now-crowded long side, while a dovish tone could extend the squeeze.

Traders should watch whether funding holds above the 90th percentile after the decision. If it does, it signals genuine bullish conviction. If it collapses, the short squeeze was likely a one-off event rather than a trend change. The divergence between funding and liquidation flows is the key signal to monitor.
