Bitcoin Spot ETFs Bleed $1.28B in Largest Weekly Outflow Since June

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $1.28 billion in net outflows last week, the largest since June, erasing the year's cumulative inflows. Ether, Solana, and Hyperliquid ETFs also extended their losing streaks, pointing to a broad institutional retreat from crypto ETPs.

Bitcoin ETFs Post Largest Weekly Outflow Since June

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net outflow of $1.28 billion for the week ended November 8, the largest weekly redemption since late June and the second consecutive week of net outflows. The reversal has wiped out the year-to-date gains for the 12-fund complex: cumulative net outflows now stand at approximately $914.1 million, compared with net inflows of roughly $368 million before the week began. Friday alone saw $411.9 million exit the funds, with BlackRock’s IBIT accounting for $403 million of that total.

The selling pressure was not confined to Bitcoin. Spot Ether ETFs bled $365.3 million for the week, marking a sixth straight week of outflows. Solana and Hyperliquid ETFs each recorded a fifth consecutive week of net redemptions, underscoring a broad-based retreat from crypto exchange-traded products rather than an isolated Bitcoin-specific event.

What Is Driving the Exodus?

Several forces appear to be converging. Macro headwinds remain the primary suspect: with U.S. Treasury yields elevated and the Federal Reserve signaling a slower pace of rate cuts, risk assets broadly have struggled to attract fresh capital. Crypto, as the highest-beta segment of the risk spectrum, tends to feel such shifts first and hardest.

Profit-taking may also be at play. Bitcoin’s rally earlier this year left many ETF holders sitting on substantial gains, and the recent consolidation has provided an incentive to lock in returns ahead of year-end. Institutional allocators, in particular, are subject to rebalancing and tax-loss harvesting considerations that can amplify flows in either direction.

The concentration of outflows in IBIT is notable. BlackRock’s fund has been the dominant beneficiary of institutional demand, so it is natural that it would lead on the way out. But a single-day redemption of $403 million is large enough to suggest that at least some sizeable allocators are trimming positions rather than merely rebalancing.

Implications for the Market Structure

The ETF flow data has become one of the most closely watched indicators in crypto markets, functioning as a real-time proxy for institutional sentiment. Two consecutive weeks of outflows—and a full reversal of the year’s net inflows—will likely weigh on market psychology in the near term.

  • Liquidity: Persistent redemptions reduce the marginal buyer base for Bitcoin and can exacerbate price declines during periods of stress.
  • Ether and altcoin products: Six straight weeks of outflows from Ether ETFs, and five from Solana and Hyperliquid products, suggest that the rotation out of crypto ETPs is broad, not tactical.
  • Issuer economics: Fee revenue for issuers is directly tied to AUM; a prolonged outflow cycle would pressure the economics of smaller, higher-fee products.

Looking Ahead

The key question is whether this is a pause or a regime change. The ETF wrapper has fundamentally altered how institutions access Bitcoin, and the long-term adoption trend remains intact. But flows are cyclical, and the current bout of risk aversion is unlikely to reverse until macro conditions stabilize—most likely when rate-cut expectations firm up or Treasury yields retreat.

For now, the market is in a wait-and-see posture. A single week of inflows would not confirm a turnaround, but three or four consecutive weeks would. Until then, ETF flow data will remain the market’s most reliable—and most closely scrutinized—sentiment gauge.
