Uruguay declares health emergency over H5 bird flu

Uruguay declared a nationwide health emergency on September 4 after detecting highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza in backyard poultry in Colonia province. The agriculture ministry restricted movement of non-monitored birds and mandated covered housing for backyard and free-range poultry. Markets, auctions, and exhibitions involving birds are suspended.
