Panama Canal daily transits may drop to 27, chief says

Panama Canal Authority chief Ilya Espino de Marotta said daily vessel transits could fall further from the current reduced level of 32 to as low as 27. She described the potential cut as a “worst-case scenario” based on simulations using 1997 rainfall patterns, the driest year on record. Climate change is increasing the frequency of dry years, she added.
