Standard Chartered Initiates Coverage of Sky’s SKY Token, Sets $0.325 Price Target for 2028

Standard Chartered Bets on Sky Protocol With Bullish Five-Year Price Target

Standard Chartered has initiated coverage of the SKY token, the governance token of the Sky protocol ecosystem, setting a price target of $0.325 by the end of 2028. That represents roughly 5x the approximately $0.065 referenced in the report. The move is one of the first instances of a major global bank formally publishing research coverage on a DeFi governance token, a notable shift in how traditional financial institutions are approaching decentralized finance assets.

Why the Price Target Matters

Geoff Kendrick, who leads the bank’s digital asset research, is one of the most vocal institutional voices on token economics, having previously published frameworks for bitcoin and ether price trajectories tied to ETF flows and adoption curves. Extending that methodology to DeFi governance tokens suggests the bank views protocol-level fundamentals — total value locked, fee generation, and token utility — as legitimate inputs to traditional equity-style valuation models.

Sky, formerly known as MakerDAO, is one of the oldest and most established lending protocols in decentralized finance. Its rebranding, the introduction of the SKY token, and the continued operation of the USDS stablecoin represent a strategic pivot toward the broader stablecoin and lending ecosystem. The protocol’s longevity provides multiple years of on-chain revenue, collateral management, and governance activity for analysts to model.

Institutional Validation or Speculative Framing?

The bull case rests on several pillars:

  • Stablecoin expansion: USDS competes directly with USDC and USDT, and its growth trajectory is tied to DeFi lending demand and yield-bearing stablecoin products.
  • Protocol revenue: Sky’s lending engine generates fees from collateralized debt positions, creating a cash-flow narrative that traditional analysts can map to valuations.
  • Governance token utility: SKY holders participate in protocol decisions and, in some configurations, capture surplus value — a structure resembling equity-like claims.

Critics note, however, that DeFi governance tokens have historically struggled to sustain valuations that reflect protocol revenue. The main reasons are that token holders rarely receive direct cash flows, and regulatory uncertainty around governance tokens remains unresolved in major jurisdictions.

The Forward-Looking View

The significance of this coverage extends beyond a single price target. If top-tier banks begin systematically publishing research on DeFi governance tokens, it could accelerate institutional allocation to the sector — but it could also invite tighter regulatory scrutiny, particularly in the United States, where the classification of governance tokens remains contested. Whether Sky can deliver a 5x price increase depends less on narrative than on whether USDS adoption, protocol revenue, and token holder economics genuinely converge. For now, the report signals that institutions once dismissive of the sector are taking DeFi’s blue-chip protocols seriously.
