Traditional Trusts Are Losing the Next Generation of Crypto Wealth

New Fire Research argues that traditional trusts are turning away crypto high-net-worth clients by demanding full liquidation into fiat. With spot ETFs, on-chain audits, institutional custody, and RWA infrastructure now mature, the refusal logic has been disproven—and licensed digital-asset trust firms are capturing a trillion-dollar generational wealth transfer.

Traditional Trusts Are Losing the Next Generation of Crypto Wealth

New Fire Research (新火研究院) warns that traditional trust institutions are refusing to set up offshore trusts for crypto high-net-worth clients, citing volatility, on-chain opacity, and custody difficulty. Their condition: clients must liquidate digital assets entirely and deposit only fiat. That refusal, the research argues, is now being disproven by the market itself.

The Refusal Logic Is Broken

The institutions’ core objections—price swings, lack of transparency, custody risk—no longer hold up. Spot crypto ETFs have brought regulated, liquid exposure to major assets. On-chain穿透审计 (penetrating audits) now let trustees verify reserves and flows in real time. Institutional-grade custodians offer insured, segregated, bankruptcy-remote storage. And RWA infrastructure has matured to the point where tokenized treasuries, private credit, and real estate can sit inside a trust structure with proper legal wrappers.

  • Spot ETFs provide daily NAV, exchange listing, and mainstream brokerage access.
  • On-chain audit tools give trustees continuous proof-of-reserves and transaction monitoring.
  • Qualified custodians deliver SOC 2, insurance, and multi-jurisdiction regulatory coverage.
  • RWA rails allow tokenized assets to be held, transferred, and reported under trust law.

Why This Is a Trillion-Dollar Handoff

Family offices and next-gen heirs increasingly hold their wealth in digital assets. When a traditional trustee demands full liquidation, it forces a taxable event, destroys upside exposure, and signals to the client that the institution does not understand their portfolio. The result is a quiet migration: licensed digital-asset trust companies with full-stack compliance—custody, tax, legal, and on-chain reporting—are absorbing this client base.

The断层 (fault line) is not about crypto risk. It is about institutional capability. A trustee that cannot hold, value, or audit digital assets is not a safe pair of hands for a portfolio that includes them. The market has already priced this in: ETF inflows, RWA issuance, and custody AUM all point the same direction.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Expect three shifts. First, traditional trusts will either build digital-asset desks or partner with licensed crypto custodians within 18–24 months. Second, regulators will clarify fiduciary standards for digital assets, making refusal less defensible. Third, the next generation of wealth will concentrate in institutions that can bridge fiat and on-chain rails natively. The trillion-dollar question is not whether crypto wealth needs trusts—it is whether traditional trusts can adapt before the clients are gone.
