ByteDance Merges Doubao, Feishu and Volcano Engine to Form Unified AI Office Platform

ByteDance has completed a major restructuring of its AI office business, merging Doubao, Feishu and Volcano Engine into a unified enterprise intelligence platform. The move positions the company to compete directly with Tencent and Alibaba in the rapidly growing AI office market, with Feishu reporting record ARR growth and expanded agent capabilities.

ByteDance Consolidates AI Office Business into a Single Enterprise Intelligence Platform

ByteDance has completed a systematic restructuring of its AI office business, integrating Doubao, Feishu and Volcano Engine into a unified enterprise intelligence platform. The move, finalized at the “2026 Feishu Future Unlimited Conference and Doubao Work Kickoff Meeting” on September 15, marks the tech giant’s formal entry into the AI office race as a coordinated group force, competing head-on with Tencent and Alibaba.

CEO Liang Rubo made a rare public appearance at the event, stating that agents, models and collaboration environments must be tightly fused to deliver real value. Under the new structure, Doubao provides intelligence and agent capabilities, Volcano Engine supplies models, compute and enterprise services, while Feishu carries the collaboration environment and workplace context. Liang explicitly committed to investing more resources in the enterprise market.

Restructuring Details and Strategic Logic

The integration unfolded over less than two months. On July 30, Feishu’s product team merged with Doubao’s product team, with Feishu head Xie Xin reporting to Doubao head Zhao Qi. Feishu’s marketing, sales and customer service teams were combined with Volcano Engine to form a new To-B go-to-market organization. By August 24, TRAE and Coze-related teams were further consolidated under Doubao, and “Doubao Work” was officially launched on August 25.

Liang explained the strategic rationale: large model agent capabilities reached a usable stage at the end of last year, and AI adoption in productivity scenarios accelerated markedly. Agents do not exist in isolation—they need to collaborate with people, work environments and other agents, and are highly bound to model capabilities.

Feishu disclosed that its annual recurring revenue (ARR) growth in the first half of 2026 reached 2.5 times the year-ago level, a record since inception. More than 90% of new customers also purchased Feishu AI products, and the total number of small and medium enterprise customers grew 70% over the past year. Feishu also released version 8.0, systematically restructuring for agents and expanding open functional interfaces from 247 in March to 767.

Product Upgrades: Agents as Team Members

Feishu 8.0 deeply integrates agent capabilities, allowing agents to be pulled into Feishu groups like employees and to execute tasks such as writing documents, operating multi-dimensional tables, scheduling, attending meetings, accessing cloud drives and initiating approvals. ByteDance also launched “Doubao Work Partner,” upgrading agents from personal assistants to “team members” with independent identities, permissions and memory.

Feishu CEO Xie Xin emphasized the “native integration” between Doubao Work and Feishu, distinguishing it from ordinary third-party agent access. The key differences include account-level connectivity—employees remain within their original enterprise account system and data security boundary—deep integration of context and tools, and ubiquitous availability across Feishu scenarios. Feishu 8.0 adds agent-specific security controls covering visibility, manageability and traceability, along with protection against prompt injection and malicious links.

Competitive Landscape

The AI office race is taking shape. Tencent’s WorkBuddy currently leads, with 20.97 million monthly visits in June and 11.15 million monthly active users in July. Tencent has invested heavily in offline advertising, estimated at nearly 100 million yuan across four major cities, and consolidated its QClaw product center into the WorkBuddy division. Alibaba integrated its QoderWork, MuleRun and Wukong products into “Qianwen Office” and plans full DingTalk integration.

With all three tech giants having completed or nearly completed internal consolidation, the battle for the massive enterprise AI office market is entering a phase of direct confrontation.

Key Takeaways for Investors

  • Enterprise AI monetization is accelerating: Feishu’s ARR growth of 2.5x year-over-year and 70% SME customer growth signal strong demand for AI-integrated office tools, validating the enterprise software AI upgrade cycle.
  • Platform consolidation is the winning strategy: ByteDance’s integration of models, agents and collaboration tools mirrors Microsoft’s Office-to-Teams evolution, suggesting bundled AI platforms will capture disproportionate enterprise value.
  • Competitive intensity is rising: Tencent’s market leadership and Alibaba’s DingTalk integration mean pricing pressure and heavy marketing spend are likely, potentially compressing margins in the near term.
  • Watch for IPO and spin-off signals: As these businesses scale, Feishu or Doubao Work could emerge as standalone entities, creating potential investment opportunities in China’s enterprise SaaS sector.
