B.AI Launches ‘Global Intelligent Settlement Layer’ to Power Trillion-Token AI Economy

B.AI has launched a "Global Intelligent Settlement Layer" that combines compute scheduling, on-chain settlement, and agent infrastructure. Positioned "above all models, below all agents," the project bets that machine-to-machine payments will become crypto's most durable source of demand.

B.AI Positions Itself as the Settlement Backbone for the Agent Economy

B.AI has unveiled what it calls a “Global Intelligent Settlement Layer,” an infrastructure stack that fuses compute scheduling, underlying settlement, and full-stack agent tooling. The project frames its positioning with a striking formulation: “above all models, below all agents” — meaning it sits between the large language models that generate intelligence and the autonomous agents that consume it.

The timing reflects a broader shift in how the AI industry thinks about payments. As model inference becomes commoditized and token consumption explodes, the bottleneck is no longer raw intelligence but the plumbing that lets models, agents, and users transact with each other across borders and chains.

Why Settlement Is the Missing Layer

The current AI stack has grown vertically: foundation models at the bottom, orchestration frameworks in the middle, and consumer-facing agents on top. What it lacks is a neutral settlement rail — a way for an agent to pay for inference, for a compute provider to get paid, and for value to move across jurisdictions without friction.

B.AI’s thesis is that this rail should be crypto-native. By combining compute scheduling with on-chain settlement, the protocol aims to let agents hold balances, pay per token, and settle instantly with GPU providers. That model echoes the broader convergence of decentralized compute networks and AI inference markets, where payment and compute are increasingly bundled.

  • Compute scheduling: routing inference workloads across heterogeneous GPU supply.
  • Settlement layer: programmable, cross-border payments denominated in tokens.
  • Agent infrastructure: identity, wallet, and payment primitives for autonomous software.

The Trillion-Token Thesis

The “trillion-token era” framing is not hyperbole. Daily token throughput across major model providers has grown by orders of magnitude, and agentic workloads — where a single task triggers hundreds of model calls — will multiply that further. If even a fraction of that volume settles on-chain, the addressable market for an AI settlement layer is enormous.

The competitive question is whether B.AI can become the default rail before incumbent payment networks, cloud providers, or competing crypto protocols capture the same flow. The company’s bet is that neutrality — being model-agnostic and chain-agnostic — is the winning strategy.

Forward Look

For the crypto industry, B.AI’s push underscores a maturing narrative: the most durable demand for blockchain may not come from speculative trading but from machine-to-machine payments. If agents become economic actors, they will need rails built for speed, programmability, and global reach. Whether B.AI becomes that rail or merely proves the category, the direction of travel is clear — settlement, not speculation, may be crypto’s most important export to the AI economy.
