Coinbase Seeks Single-Stock Perpetuals, CFTC Moves on Crypto Rules as TradFi Meets 24/7 Trading

Coinbase has applied to list single-stock perpetual futures for Apple, Tesla and Nvidia, bringing 24/7 leveraged equity trading to crypto rails. The move converges with CFTC rulemaking, Bastion's OCC trust bank approval and a staking-enabled Injective ETF, signaling an accelerating merge of TradFi and crypto market structure.

Coinbase Files for Single-Stock Perpetual Futures

Coinbase has applied to list perpetual futures tied to individual U.S. equities including Apple, Tesla and Nvidia, a move that would let traders go long or short the world’s most-followed stocks around the clock. The filing marks one of the clearest signs yet that the boundary between traditional finance and crypto-native derivatives is dissolving.

The products would give retail and institutional users 24/7 exposure without waiting for the New York trading session to open, and without the overnight gaps that have historically defined equity markets. For Coinbase, it is a direct challenge to brokerages such as Robinhood and Interactive Brokers, but with a structurally different product: leveraged, perpetual, and settled in crypto rails.

Why This Matters Beyond One Exchange

Single-stock perpetuals are not just a new ticker. They represent a shift in how price discovery happens. If demand for 24/7 equity exposure grows, liquidity could migrate away from traditional exchanges during off-hours, forcing incumbent venues to reconsider their own market hours and settlement cycles.

  • Time becomes the product. Crypto venues can offer continuous trading; legacy exchanges cannot easily match that without overhauling clearing and settlement.
  • Regulatory overlap intensifies. Equity-linked perpetuals sit at the intersection of securities and derivatives regulation, an area where U.S. rules remain unsettled.
  • Competitive pressure builds. Binance has already launched 24/7 FX perpetuals, signaling that the race to tokenize traditional asset classes is global.

The Regulatory Backdrop Is Shifting

The CFTC is reportedly moving forward with crypto rulemaking even as Congress stalls on comprehensive market structure legislation. That regulatory vacuum has pushed the agency to act unilaterally, with the White House and the stalled CLARITY Act shaping the political calculus. Meanwhile, Bastion has received conditional OCC approval for a national trust bank charter, evidence that crypto custody firms are racing to acquire bank-grade compliance infrastructure.

ETF Design Is Evolving Too

21Shares has updated its Injective ETF filing so that 40%–60% of the INJ held will be staked, with BNY Mellon as administrator and custodian and a Nasdaq listing under the ticker TINJ. Embedding staking yield into an ETF wrapper is a meaningful structural change: it turns a passive holding into a yield-bearing instrument, blurring the line between a fund and a staking service.

The Bigger Picture: Two Roads Being Paved at Once

Crypto infrastructure is simultaneously making traditional assets crypto-native and making crypto assets institution-ready. Single-stock perpetuals, FX perpetuals, staking ETFs and trust bank charters are all pieces of the same build-out. The question for investors and regulators is no longer whether these worlds will converge, but who sets the rules when they do.

Kevin O’Leary’s prediction of a $1 million Bitcoin — conditional on quantum-resistant cryptography arriving in time — is a reminder that the long-term thesis now depends as much on technological resilience as on adoption. For now, the more immediate story is plumbing: 24/7 markets, yield-bearing wrappers, and bank charters. That is where the next phase of institutional capital will be won or lost.
