Ondo Finance Launches Two-Way Physical Conversion Between Stocks and Tokenized Equities

Ondo Finance's Ondo Stocks now supports two-way physical conversion between traditional stocks and tokenized equities/ETFs via Alpaca's Instant Tokenization Network. This integration allows approved institutions to seamlessly convert shares to tokens and back, bridging traditional and DeFi markets. The move advances RWA tokenization by providing a crucial redemption mechanism, potentially boosting institutional adoption and liquidity.

Ondo Stocks Enables Two-Way Physical Conversion Between Traditional Equities and Tokenized Assets

Ondo Finance has announced that its Ondo Stocks platform now supports two-way physical conversion between underlying stocks and tokenized stocks and ETFs. Through integration with Alpaca’s Instant Tokenization Network (ITN), approved institutions can directly convert existing shares into tokenized form and vice versa, bridging traditional and on-chain markets.

The Mechanics of Physical Conversion

Unlike synthetic tokenized products that rely on derivatives or off-chain collateral arrangements, Ondo Stocks’ physical conversion allows for the direct exchange of actual shares for their blockchain-based representations. This means that for every tokenized stock issued, there is a corresponding share held in custody, and the conversion process is reversible. Institutions can tokenize their holdings to access DeFi liquidity, or redeem tokens to take possession of the underlying securities.

The integration with Alpaca’s ITN, a real-time settlement network, ensures that conversions can be executed quickly and with minimal friction. This is a significant improvement over traditional settlement cycles, which can take days.

Industry Implications

The launch of two-way physical conversion is a major step forward for the real-world asset (RWA) tokenization narrative. It addresses one of the key concerns institutional investors have had about tokenized securities: the ability to redeem tokens for actual shares. By providing a seamless bridge, Ondo Finance is making tokenized equities more attractive to a broader range of participants, including hedge funds, asset managers, and family offices.

Moreover, this development could enhance liquidity in both traditional and DeFi markets. Tokenized stocks can be traded 24/7 on decentralized exchanges, used as collateral in lending protocols, or incorporated into structured products, while still being backed by real shares. This opens up new possibilities for arbitrage, hedging, and yield generation.

Forward-Looking Perspective

As regulatory clarity around tokenized securities improves, we can expect more players to enter the space. Ondo Finance’s move may pressure competitors like Backed Finance, Swarm Markets, and even traditional exchanges to offer similar capabilities. In the long run, the lines between traditional finance and DeFi will continue to blur, and physical conversion mechanisms like this will be foundational to a unified global market for securities.

However, challenges remain. Regulatory compliance across jurisdictions, custody risks, and the need for robust market infrastructure are all hurdles that must be addressed. Nonetheless, Ondo Finance’s initiative signals a maturing market that is increasingly ready for mainstream adoption.
