JNBY Expands Brand Portfolio with Marsèll Partnership
TREE NEWS reports: Chinese fashion group JNBY has entered a strategic partnership with Italian high-end handmade footwear and leather goods brand Marsèll, securing exclusive operating rights for the Greater China region, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. The deal also grants JNBY long-term trademark rights for Marsèll in the region.
Unlike JNBY’s previous brand expansion efforts, which relied primarily on internal incubation, Marsèll is an independent designer brand that has operated in overseas markets for over two decades. Founded in 2001 along the Brenta River near Venice—a traditional Italian footwear manufacturing hub—Marsèll specializes in men’s and women’s shoes, along with handbags and leather accessories, all produced in the Veneto region with an emphasis on leather treatment, handcrafted finishes, and structural design.
Market Implications: A Strategic Shift in Growth Strategy
This partnership signals a meaningful shift in JNBY’s growth approach. The company’s fiscal 2026 results show revenue of RMB 6.046 billion, up 9% year-over-year, with net profit of approximately RMB 997 million, up 11.1%. However, physical retail stores totaled 2,118 as of June 2026, an increase of just one store from the prior fiscal year. Online revenue grew 20.5% to RMB 1.448 billion.
With store count essentially flat, JNBY must seek growth from per-store efficiency, online channels, and new brands. The emerging brand portfolio generated RMB 478 million in fiscal 2026, up 32.2%, but still represents only 7.9% of total revenue. The main JNBY brand continues to contribute more than half of total revenue, meaning new businesses have yet to reshape the overall revenue structure.
Marsèll’s limited brand awareness in China presents both opportunity and challenge. The brand opened its first flagship store in Milan in December 2023 and has primarily reached Chinese consumers through buyer’s shops and high-end department stores, with a temporary retail space at Chengdu SKP in spring 2026. JNBY’s existing stores, membership base of over 610,000 active accounts—including more than 360,000 spending over RMB 5,000 annually—and multi-brand collection stores can provide initial touchpoints for Marsèll.
Broader Luxury Market Headwinds
The partnership comes amid a challenging luxury market in China. Bain data shows the mainland personal luxury market contracted 3% to 5% in 2025, with consumers increasingly focused on quality, practicality, and price rationality when purchasing high-priced goods. Marsèll’s handcrafted production and differentiated design offer recognizability, but its relatively limited brand awareness means higher market education costs.
Footwear, compared to apparel, places greater emphasis on sizing, try-on experience, and after-sales service, making physical channels particularly important. This dynamic aligns with JNBY’s existing retail infrastructure and could help the company capture incremental growth from a segment where its product offering has been relatively weak.
Key Takeaways for Investors
- Growth strategy evolution: JNBY is pivoting from internal brand incubation to external partnerships to diversify revenue streams, a necessary move given flat store growth.
- Execution risk remains: Marsèll’s limited brand recognition in China means significant investment in marketing and consumer education will be required to build scale.
- Luxury market caution: The contraction in China’s personal luxury market suggests near-term headwinds for premium brands, though differentiated, high-quality products may still find willing buyers.
- Long-term positioning: Securing regional trademark rights allows JNBY to plan Marsèll’s channel and product strategy over a longer horizon, potentially creating a new business increment if product positioning is maintained while scaling sales.
