Nine Japanese Financial Giants Complete Cross-Chain DvP Settlement Pilot

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Daiwa Securities, SBI Securities, Progmat, Datachain and four other Japanese institutions completed phase two of Project Trinity, validating cross-chain delivery-versus-payment settlement for tokenized securities. The pilot signals that incumbent Japanese finance is building interoperable settlement infrastructure for tokenized capital markets.

Japan’s Tokenized Securities Push Enters a New Phase

Nine Japanese financial institutions — including Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Daiwa Securities, SBI Securities, Progmat, and Datachain — have completed the second phase of validation for “Project Trinity,” a proof-of-concept aimed at synchronizing delivery-versus-payment (DvP) settlement across multiple blockchains. The milestone marks one of the most concrete demonstrations to date that tokenized bonds, deposits, and cash can settle atomically across heterogeneous ledger systems without a central intermediary.

What Project Trinity Actually Achieves

DvP is the bedrock of securities settlement: the simultaneous exchange of an asset for payment, eliminating principal risk. In traditional markets, this is handled by central securities depositories and central banks. Project Trinity’s contribution is proving that the same guarantee can be engineered across separate chains — one holding tokenized securities, another holding tokenized deposits or stablecoin-like instruments — using cross-chain messaging and smart-contract escrow.

The consortium’s composition is telling. It pairs megabanks (SMBC), brokerages (Daiwa, SBI), a tokenization platform (Progmat), and a cross-chain infrastructure provider (Datachain). This is not a crypto-native experiment; it is incumbent infrastructure being rebuilt on distributed rails.

Why This Matters for the RWA Thesis

  • Interoperability over fragmentation: Japan’s financial groups are explicitly avoiding a single-chain monoculture, betting that a multi-chain future requires settlement layers that talk to each other.
  • Regulatory alignment: Progmat’s security token platform operates within Japan’s evolving digital asset framework, giving the pilot a credible path to production.
  • Institutional demand signal: Tokenized Japanese government bonds and corporate debt are among the most-watched RWA categories in Asia, and reliable DvP is the gating factor for institutional volume.

The global context amplifies the significance. Tokenized treasury products have crossed tens of billions in cumulative issuance, and major custodians and asset managers are racing to build settlement infrastructure. Japan’s approach — consortium-driven, bank-anchored, interoperability-first — contrasts with the more fragmented, startup-led experimentation seen elsewhere.

The Road Ahead

Phase three will likely focus on scaling transaction throughput, integrating with Japan’s payment systems, and stress-testing legal finality — the question of when a cross-chain transfer is truly irreversible under Japanese law. If Project Trinity moves to production, it could become a reference architecture for other Asian jurisdictions building tokenized capital markets. The message to global institutions is clear: cross-chain DvP is no longer theoretical. It is being engineered, tested, and prepared for live settlement.
