Papertrade Hits $770B Notional Volume on HyperEVM as Open Interest Falls to $510M

Papertrade, a synthetic perpetuals protocol on HyperEVM, has surpassed $770 billion in cumulative notional volume since its October 10 launch, with TVL around $626 million and open interest down to $510 million. The gap between massive turnover and shrinking open interest raises questions about the durability of its liquidity.

Synthetic Perps Protocol Posts Massive Volume but Shrinking Open Interest

Papertrade, a synthetic perpetual futures protocol built on HyperEVM, has processed more than $770 billion in cumulative notional trading volume since launching on October 10. The platform currently holds roughly $626 million in total value locked, while open interest has dropped to $510 million.

The numbers paint a picture of a protocol that has rapidly become a volume powerhouse in the Hyperliquid ecosystem even as leverage appetite cools. Synthetic perpetuals — contracts that track an underlying asset without requiring direct spot holdings — have become a dominant primitive in on-chain derivatives, and Papertrade’s early traction suggests demand for accessible, capital-efficient perp exposure remains strong.

Why the Volume-to-Open-Interest Gap Matters

A $770 billion cumulative notional figure against just over $500 million in open interest implies extremely high turnover. In perp markets, this ratio is often a sign of active short-term trading, market-making, or incentive-driven volume rather than sticky directional positioning. For DeFi analysts, the key question is whether that flow is organic or subsidized.

  • Capital efficiency: Synthetic designs let traders express views with less collateral than fully collateralized spot-backed perps, amplifying notional volume per dollar of TVL.
  • Liquidity flywheel: High turnover can attract market makers, tightening spreads and deepening order books — a positive feedback loop if it holds.
  • Risk concentration: Falling open interest can signal deleveraging or waning conviction, which may reduce fee revenue if volume follows.

HyperEVM as a Launchpad

Papertrade’s reliance on HyperEVM is notable. Hyperliquid’s EVM-compatible layer has become a magnet for perp and derivatives projects seeking low-latency execution and deep liquidity. Building natively on HyperEVM lets protocols tap into Hyperliquid’s order flow and user base, but it also ties their fate to a single ecosystem’s performance and governance decisions.

The $626 million TVL places Papertrade among the larger DeFi derivatives venues, though it remains well below category leaders. Sustaining that base will depend on fee structures, incentive programs, and the protocol’s ability to retain traders after any points or airdrop campaigns conclude.

What to Watch Next

Three metrics will define Papertrade’s trajectory over the coming quarters:

  • Open interest recovery: Whether OI stabilizes above $500 million or continues to slide will indicate if traders are staying for the long haul.
  • Fee capture: Notional volume is only meaningful if it converts into protocol revenue and tokenholder value.
  • Competitive pressure: Rival perp DEXs on HyperEVM and beyond are competing for the same liquidity, and incentive wars can erode margins quickly.

Papertrade has proven it can generate attention and throughput. The harder test — turning speculative volume into durable, risk-managed liquidity — is only beginning.
