BlackRock Upgrades US Treasuries, Ends Six-Year Underweight Stance

BlackRock Investment Institute upgraded US Treasuries and ended a six-year underweight stance, citing attractive yields and potentially overpriced Fed tightening. The firm downgraded US equities to neutral and favors short-dated bonds, a shift with implications for crypto and tokenized Treasury markets.

BlackRock Flips on Treasuries After Yields Surge

BlackRock Investment Institute has upgraded its allocation rating on US Treasuries and tilted toward shorter-dated maturities, ending a nearly six-year underweight stance. The asset manager said sharply higher yields have made potential returns more attractive, and that the market may be overpricing Federal Reserve tightening expectations.

“Higher yields, and a market that may have overpriced Fed tightening, created room for us to adjust our underweight Treasuries stance,” BlackRock strategists wrote. The firm simultaneously downgraded US equities to neutral while adding Treasuries across the curve, with a continued preference for the short end.

Why the Shift Matters

The move is a notable signal from the world’s largest asset manager. For years, BlackRock’s underweight on Treasuries reflected expectations of rising rates and sticky inflation. The reversal suggests the firm now sees the risk-reward skewed toward fixed income, particularly as real yields approach levels not seen in over a decade.

  • Duration appeal: Short-dated Treasuries offer attractive carry with limited rate risk, appealing to cash-heavy investors.
  • Equity caution: Downgrading US stocks to neutral hints at concerns over valuations and earnings momentum.
  • Fed expectations: The view that tightening is overpriced implies a potential dovish repricing if inflation cools.

Implications for Crypto and RWA Markets

Higher risk-free rates have been a headwind for crypto and risk assets broadly, drawing capital into yield-bearing Treasuries. If BlackRock’s call proves correct and yields stabilize or fall, that pressure could ease. A more constructive rate environment historically supports bitcoin, ether, and tokenized real-world asset products that compete with traditional fixed income.

The rise of tokenized Treasuries — on-chain products backed by short-term government debt — makes this shift especially relevant. Platforms offering tokenized T-bills and money market exposure have grown rapidly as investors seek yield. A change in the rate outlook could reshape demand for these instruments, either slowing inflows if yields fall or reinforcing their appeal if volatility returns.

Forward-Looking Perspective

BlackRock’s pivot should be read as a tactical, not structural, call. The firm still favors short duration, implying caution on long-term inflation and fiscal risk. For crypto markets, the key question is whether Treasury yields have peaked. If they have, the opportunity cost of holding digital assets declines, potentially reviving risk appetite. If they haven’t, the competition from government debt will remain intense, keeping pressure on speculative assets and reinforcing the case for yield-bearing tokenized products.

Investors should watch upcoming inflation prints and Fed commentary closely. BlackRock’s move suggests that at least one major institution believes the bond market has turned a corner — a signal worth monitoring across both traditional and digital asset portfolios.
