dYdX Treasury Staking Tops 100M DYDX as Governance Shake-Up Zeroes Out Five Validators

The dYdX Treasury SubDAO has pushed its total staked DYDX above 100 million after a major reorganization that injected 10.7 million buyback tokens and zeroed out five validators for poor governance participation. The move, tied to Proposal 396, aims to boost decentralization and accountability.

dYdX Treasury Staking Surpasses 100 Million DYDX

The dYdX Treasury SubDAO has completed a major staking reorganization, pushing its total delegated DYDX above 100 million tokens for the first time. The move, detailed in the epoch 7 review of the staking program, involved 25 atomic transactions moving 25,873,915 DYDX. Of that, 10,719,308 tokens were newly injected from prior open-market buybacks, while 15,154,607 tokens were redelegated from existing stakes. Total treasury delegation rose from 90,041,355 to 100,760,663 DYDX.

Efficient Redelegation Preserves Yield

All existing stakes were moved via Cosmos native redelegation, keeping assets locked and earning throughout the process. This avoided the lengthy unbonding periods typical of PoS networks and prevented consensus disruption from offline capital.

Proposal 396 Triggers Validator Shake-Up

The reorganization follows Proposal 396, effective September 17, which reduced the active validator set from 31 to 21 to improve peer-to-peer communication and block times. The reduction left roughly 8.34 million DYDX delegated to validators outside the active set, earning zero rewards. The Treasury responded with two strict allocation rules.

First, it capped how much treasury delegation any single validator can receive, using an inverse-dependency model: validators with strong community stake and low reliance on official support received larger allocations. This is designed to prevent voting-power oligopoly and encourage market-based competition.

Governance Participation Becomes a Hard Requirement

Second, the Treasury systematically cut allocations to validators that recently abstained or missed governance votes. Five validators—Interstellar, Luganodes, Silk Nodes, Citadel.one, and DELIGHT—saw their delegations zeroed out, each losing 1.5 million to 1.96 million DYDX. Keplr lost 4,344,884 DYDX, leaving 766,749, while Meria had 425,406 DYDX removed. The reallocated tokens went to active validators: AutoStake gained 3.6 million, Allnodes 3.38 million, and CLC, TTT VN, Crosnest, and Bitwise each received over 2 million.

Industry Implications

The dYdX Treasury’s approach sets a precedent for DAO treasury management in PoS ecosystems. By tying delegation to governance participation and validator independence, it treats staking as a strategic tool for decentralization rather than passive yield. The use of redelegation to avoid unbonding delays showcases operational sophistication that other appchains may emulate.

However, the zeroing out of established validators raises questions about centralization risks. While the inverse-dependency model aims to reduce oligarchy, the Treasury itself now controls over 100 million DYDX—a significant voting bloc. The balance between efficient governance and decentralized control will be closely watched.

Forward-Looking Perspective

With 21 active validators and a 100 million DYDX treasury stake, dYdX Chain is positioning itself for faster block times and more coordinated governance. The next test will be whether this structure improves network performance and voter turnout without creating new forms of dependency. As other appchains grapple with similar trade-offs, dYdX’s experiment could become a blueprint—or a cautionary tale—for treasury-driven staking.
