DeepSeek Closes $15.8B Round at $86B Valuation with Nearly 30 Investors

DeepSeek has raised 105.5 billion yuan ($15.8B) in its second funding round at a valuation of 615.5 billion yuan, with nearly 30 investors including Tencent, CATL, and state funds. The massive raise highlights China's AI ambitions and signals growing convergence between AI and blockchain, from decentralized compute to tokenized models.

DeepSeek’s Record-Breaking Funding Round

DeepSeek has completed its second funding round, raising 105.5 billion yuan (approximately $15.8 billion) at a valuation of 615.5 billion yuan, with nearly 30 investors participating. The round underscores the immense capital flowing into China’s artificial intelligence sector and the growing convergence of AI and blockchain technology.

Key Investors and Strategic Backing

Tencent Holdings and CATL remain the two largest backers. Tencent contributed 10 billion yuan in each of the two rounds, while CATL and its chairman Zeng Yuqun invested 5 billion yuan and 10 billion yuan respectively. A diverse group of industrial capital also joined, including ChangXin Memory, SMIC, vivo, Meituan, Geely Automobile, Midea Group, Luxshare Precision, Ctrip, and Xiaohongshu, with some investing between 1 billion and 3 billion yuan.

State participation increased notably. The China National AI Industry Investment Fund injected another 1 billion yuan this round, matching its first-round commitment.

Industry Analysis: AI and Crypto Convergence

The scale of this funding round highlights the fierce competition in generative AI and the strategic importance of large language models. For the crypto and Web3 ecosystem, DeepSeek’s rise signals several implications:

  • Decentralized AI Compute Demand: As AI models grow in complexity, the need for scalable compute infrastructure will drive interest in decentralized GPU networks and on-chain compute marketplaces.
  • Tokenization of AI Models: The funding frenzy could accelerate efforts to tokenize AI models and inference services, enabling new forms of investment and access.
  • Data Marketplaces: Blockchain-based data marketplaces may emerge as critical infrastructure for AI training, ensuring data provenance and privacy.

DeepSeek’s success also reflects China’s push for AI self-sufficiency, which may influence global AI supply chains and crypto projects focused on decentralized AI.

Forward-Looking Perspective

With this massive war chest, DeepSeek is poised to accelerate R&D and expand its ecosystem. The involvement of traditional industrial giants and state funds suggests AI is becoming a national priority, potentially spurring regulatory clarity and institutional adoption in the crypto-AI space. As AI and blockchain increasingly intersect, projects that bridge these technologies—such as decentralized compute networks and AI agent platforms—could attract significant investment and innovation.
