The custody boom hits a ceiling
Digital asset custody has exploded over the past year, with the number of European compliant custodians quadrupling. Global banks like Standard Chartered and Citi are accelerating their entry, signaling that institutional demand for secure storage is no longer a niche. Yet the pure custody model is approaching its limits: fee compression, commoditization, and the need for deeper utility are forcing a strategic pivot.
Trust charters unlock new business lines
Firms such as Anchorage Digital and BitGo are leveraging U.S. trust bank charters to expand beyond safekeeping. These charters allow them to offer fiduciary services, issue stablecoins, and manage assets actively—activities that blur the line between custodian and financial institution. Anchorage, for instance, has moved into stablecoin issuance and asset management, while BitGo has pursued similar diversification. The trust charter provides regulatory clarity and a stamp of legitimacy that pure custodians lack.
Stablecoins, active management, and AI agents
The pivot is driven by three converging trends:
- Stablecoin issuance: Trust banks can issue regulated stablecoins, tapping into the growing demand for tokenized fiat.
- Active asset management: Custodians are launching yield-generating products and discretionary portfolios, moving into wealth management territory.
- AI agent services: As AI agents become economic actors, they need trusted custodians to hold and transact assets on their behalf.
These services represent higher-margin opportunities and create stickier client relationships. They also position custodians at the center of the next wave of institutional crypto adoption.
Implications for the industry
The shift from custody to trust banking signals a maturation of the crypto infrastructure stack. It also intensifies competition with traditional banks and asset managers, who are themselves entering the space. Custodians that fail to evolve risk becoming utilities with thin margins. Those that secure trust charters and build out service offerings could become the backbone of institutional finance for digital assets.
Forward look
Expect more custodians to pursue trust charters or equivalent licenses in other jurisdictions. The convergence of custody, banking, and asset management will likely accelerate, with AI-driven services emerging as a new frontier. The next 18 months will determine which firms become the JPMorgans of the crypto economy—and which remain vaults.
