Bitcoin Miners Outperform AI Stocks as BTC Rally Reshapes Market Dynamics

Bitcoin mining stocks have surged past AI-focused peers, driven by a 23% BTC rally and regulatory optimism. Despite heavy AI investments, miner valuations remain tied to Bitcoin's price, highlighting a strategic divergence between capital expenditure and revenue.

Bitcoin Miners Outperform AI Stocks as BTC Rally Reshapes Market Dynamics

In a striking reversal of recent trends, Bitcoin mining stocks have surged past their AI-focused counterparts, driven by a sharp recovery in Bitcoin prices and growing demand for high-performance computing (HPC). According to BlocksBridge Consulting, Bitcoin climbed roughly 23% over the past week, propelling shares of miners like Canaan (+67%), American Bitcoin (+41%), and Cango (+53%) to impressive gains. In contrast, AI compute specialists CoreWeave (+21%), Nebius (+17%), and IREN (+15%) lagged behind.

What’s Driving the Rally?

The Bitcoin rally is underpinned by three key factors: the U.S. Treasury’s announcement on August 19 to double its long-term bond buybacks, injecting liquidity into markets; a White House meeting with crypto executives where President Trump urged Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, boosting regulatory optimism; and a short squeeze that liquidated over $1.6 billion in crypto short positions after Bitcoin broke key resistance levels. These catalysts have reignited investor appetite for Bitcoin-exposed equities.

Miner Business Models: Still Tied to Bitcoin

Despite a broader industry pivot toward AI infrastructure, miners’ core revenue remains crypto-centric. BlocksBridge data reveals that in 2026, six major public miners allocated a staggering $5.11 billion in capital expenditures to AI data centers, yet generated only $341.2 million in revenue from AI and HPC services. This stark disparity underscores that investor valuations for miners are still predominantly driven by Bitcoin’s market performance, not their nascent AI ventures.

Implications and Outlook

The outperformance signals a renewed focus on Bitcoin as a macro asset, particularly in a low-liquidity environment where government bond buybacks and potential regulatory clarity provide tailwinds. For miners, this means their stock prices will likely remain volatile, closely tracking BTC’s price swings while AI investments continue to weigh on balance sheets. Looking ahead, if the CLARITY Act passes and Bitcoin sustains its upward momentum, miners could see further upside. However, the growing divergence between capital expenditure and revenue from AI highlights a strategic risk: miners are betting big on a future that may not materialize as quickly as markets hope.

Investors should watch Bitcoin’s ability to hold above key support levels and monitor legislative progress, as these will be critical determinants of miner stock performance in the coming months.
