Kweichow Moutai Q3 Profit Rises 3.78% as Growth Shifts Back to Wholesale Channel

Kweichow Moutai's Q3 net profit rose 3.78% year-on-year, driven by a rebound in wholesale channel revenue and a lower tax burden, though low-base effects and flat gross margin temper the recovery. The results signal stabilization in China's premium liquor sector but end-demand remains tepid.

Kweichow Moutai Q3 Profit Rises 3.78% as Growth Shifts Back to Wholesale Channel

Kweichow Moutai reported third-quarter revenue of 40.267 billion yuan, up 3.08% year-on-year, and net profit attributable to shareholders of 19.951 billion yuan, up 3.78% year-on-year. The profit growth marks a sharp turnaround from the second quarter, when both revenue and profit declined, and exceeded some institutional expectations. However, the improvement is partly due to a low base: in Q3 2025, Moutai had already begun actively controlling product supply, with revenue and net profit growing only 0.56% and 0.48%, respectively.

Channel Shift Drives Margin Recovery

The key driver of the sequential profit improvement was a shift in channel mix. In Q2, Moutai reduced product allocations to wholesale distributors to avoid channel stuffing, and some non-standard products were moved to a consignment model, altering revenue recognition timing. In Q3, ahead of the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, traditional wholesale shipments recovered. Wholesale agency revenue reached 18.424 billion yuan, up nearly 30% quarter-on-quarter, while direct sales revenue fell slightly to 21.812 billion yuan. iMoutai revenue was 18.299 billion yuan, roughly flat versus Q2.

The channel shift also affected taxes. In Q2, direct sales accounted for about 61% of alcohol revenue, pushing taxes and surcharges to 17.54% of revenue. In Q3, with wholesale revenue rising, the direct sales share fell to 54.2%, and the tax ratio dropped to 15.13%, close to Q1 levels. A price increase for Feitian Moutai in July—raising the contract price and iMoutai retail price by 100 yuan each to 1,369 yuan and 1,639 yuan—also supported profit recovery.

However, overall gross margin did not improve significantly due to product mix changes. With higher sales of standard Feitian and price cuts on some high-value non-standard products, revenue per ton came under pressure. Higher sales volume also led to more cost of goods sold, causing operating cost growth to outpace revenue growth. Q3 gross margin was about 89.6%, only slightly better sequentially but still down year-on-year.

Market prices for Feitian Moutai remained stable. As of October 30, 2026 vintage Feitian original cases were quoted at 1,715 yuan per bottle, and loose bottles at 1,695 yuan, roughly flat over the past month. Older vintages saw slight declines.

Market Implications

For equity investors, Moutai’s Q3 results signal that the company’s channel reforms are beginning to stabilize earnings. The shift back to wholesale suggests Moutai is prioritizing volume and distributor health over direct sales expansion, which could ease pressure on distributor margins and support near-term revenue. However, the reliance on low-base comparisons and the lack of gross margin improvement indicate that structural challenges remain. The stock may see a relief rally, but sustained re-rating depends on whether Moutai can revive demand for non-standard products and maintain price discipline.

For the broader Chinese consumer staples sector, Moutai’s performance is a bellwether. The sequential improvement in wholesale channel suggests that distributors are restocking ahead of peak season, which could bode well for other premium liquor makers. Yet, the flat market prices for Feitian indicate that end-demand remains tepid, and the company’s ability to raise prices is limited.

In bonds and currency markets, the news is unlikely to have a direct impact. However, a stabilization in Moutai’s earnings could marginally support sentiment toward Chinese consumer stocks and the yuan, as foreign investors monitor consumption trends.

For commodity markets, Moutai’s demand for sorghum and packaging materials is stable, but no significant ripple effects are expected.

Crypto markets are unaffected by this specific news, though broader risk sentiment in China could indirectly influence crypto trading if it shifts perceptions of economic growth.

Key Takeaways

  • Moutai’s Q3 profit rose 3.78% year-on-year, beating expectations but aided by a low base.
  • Wholesale channel revenue jumped nearly 30% quarter-on-quarter as Moutai rebalanced channel mix, lowering tax burden.
  • Gross margin remained under pressure due to product mix and higher costs; market prices for Feitian were stable.
  • Investors should watch whether Moutai can sustain earnings recovery through non-standard product performance and price management.
  • The results may provide short-term relief for Chinese consumer staples stocks, but end-demand recovery remains uncertain.
