Oracle Attack Inflates CoreVault Redemption 33x, Drains InsurancePool on BSC

An attacker used a flash loan to manipulate CoreVault's oracle, inflating a redemption by 33 times and draining its InsurancePool on BSC. The attacker netted 160.26 BNB (~$112,200), highlighting persistent oracle manipulation risks in DeFi.

Flash Loan-Enabled Oracle Exploit Hits CoreVault on BSC

An attacker exploited an oracle vulnerability on CoreVault, a DeFi protocol on Binance Smart Chain (BSC), inflating a single redemption by roughly 33 times and draining the protocol’s InsurancePool. The attacker used a flash loan to manipulate the oracle price feed, then reversed the trade to net 160.26 BNB, worth approximately $112,200 at the time of the attack. The total loss from the incident is estimated at around $112,300, suggesting the attacker extracted nearly the entire pool.

How the Attack Unfolded

Flash loans allow attackers to borrow large sums without collateral as long as the loan is repaid within the same transaction. In this case, the attacker likely used borrowed funds to distort the price of an asset tracked by CoreVault’s oracle, causing the protocol to miscalculate the redemption value. By redeeming at the inflated rate and then reversing the trade, the attacker walked away with a profit at the expense of the InsurancePool, which is designed to cover exactly this kind of shortfall.

Oracle manipulation remains one of the most common attack vectors in DeFi. Protocols that rely on a single price source or on spot prices from a single DEX are particularly vulnerable to flash loan-funded distortions. The CoreVault incident underscores that even relatively small pools—this one held just over $112,000—are not immune, and that attackers are willing to target smaller protocols where security audits and monitoring may be less robust.

Industry Implications

The attack highlights several persistent issues in DeFi security:

  • Oracle design: Protocols need time-weighted average prices (TWAPs), multiple independent price feeds, and circuit breakers to prevent single-transaction manipulation.
  • Insurance pool risk: Pools that backstop protocol losses become prime targets if they can be drained through inflated redemptions. Their design must include caps and delayed withdrawals.
  • Cross-chain risk: BSC has seen a number of low-cost, high-frequency exploits due to lower gas fees and a large number of smaller protocols.
  • Audit and monitoring gaps: Smaller protocols often lack the resources for continuous security monitoring, leaving them exposed to known attack patterns.

While the dollar loss is modest compared to major DeFi hacks, the incident is a reminder that oracle manipulation is far from solved. As DeFi protocols proliferate across chains, the attack surface grows, and attackers continue to refine techniques that exploit composability and flash loan liquidity.

Forward-Looking Perspective

CoreVault and similar protocols will likely face pressure to upgrade their oracle infrastructure and redesign insurance mechanisms to prevent a repeat. The broader DeFi ecosystem may see increased adoption of decentralized oracle networks with multiple data sources, as well as on-chain monitoring tools that can pause contracts when anomalous redemption patterns appear. For investors, the incident reinforces the importance of checking a protocol’s oracle design and insurance fund structure before committing capital—especially on chains where smaller, less-audited projects are common.
