OpenUSD Stablecoin Sets Ultra-Low Fee Model, Shares Reserve Yield with Partners

OpenUSD, the stablecoin backed by Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, Coinbase, and Shopify, will charge a 0.1 basis point management fee capped at $0.01 per transaction, while distributing reserve yield to partners. This model challenges the traditional stablecoin economics of USDT and USDC, which retain reserve interest.

OpenUSD Introduces 0.1 Basis Point Management Fee

OpenUSD (OUSD), the stablecoin project backed by Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, Coinbase, and Shopify, has unveiled a novel fee structure set by its governance organization, Open Standard. The protocol will charge a management fee of 0.1 basis points (bps) on payment volume, capped at $0.01 per transaction. For payments of $1,000 or more, the $0.01 cap applies, while smaller payments are charged at the 0.1 bps rate.

A Radical Departure from Traditional Stablecoin Economics

Unlike incumbents such as USDT and USDC, whose issuers retain interest earned on reserve assets, OUSD will distribute reserve yield to its partners, deducting only the management fee. This model fundamentally alters the economics of stablecoin issuance, prioritizing partner incentives over issuer profit. By sharing yield, Open Standard aims to attract a wide network of payment processors, merchants, and fintech platforms, creating a more collaborative ecosystem.

Implications for the Stablecoin Market

The stablecoin sector has long been dominated by Tether and Circle, which generate billions in revenue from reserve interest. OUSD’s approach could pressure competitors to reconsider their fee structures, especially as interest rates remain elevated. The involvement of major payment giants suggests a push toward mainstream adoption, with a focus on low-cost transactions and partner alignment. However, the success of this model hinges on the ability to scale payment volume and maintain reserve stability.

Forward-Looking Perspective

If OUSD gains traction, it could catalyze a shift toward yield-sharing stablecoins, potentially disrupting the traditional issuer-centric model. The project’s governance framework and fee transparency may also set new standards for regulatory compliance. As the stablecoin landscape evolves, OpenUSD’s experiment will be closely watched by industry participants and regulators alike.
