Bitcoin’s Healthy Reset: Short-Term Holders Capitulate as $76K-$78K Support Holds

Bitcoin has absorbed a $6.3 billion exchange hack and a Democratic midterm sweep with only a 3% drawdown, holding the $76K-$78K support zone. Short-term holder profitability collapsed from 97.5% to 38%, clearing speculative froth while short liquidation clusters build near $87K, setting up potential squeeze fuel.

Bitcoin Digests Speculative Excess After Dual Macro Shocks

Bitcoin spot price has weathered a turbulent week marked by two major shocks — a historic $6.3 billion security breach at a major exchange and the unexpected Democratic sweep in the 2026 US midterm elections. Despite a roughly 10% technical correction from September highs, BTC has demonstrated remarkable downside absorption, holding firm in the $76,000-$78,000 support zone.

Speculative Froth Cleared Out

On-chain data reveals a dramatic reset in market positioning. The percentage of short-term holder supply in profit — which peaked above 97.5% in early October at extreme greed levels — has collapsed to approximately 38%. This means the vast majority of recent buyers are now underwater, effectively washing out the speculative excess that had built up during the rally.

Bitcoin is now precisely retesting the breakout level from August. The True Market Mean sits at $77,700, while the short-term holder cost basis rests near $75,700 — both providing a technical buffer beneath spot price. As long as BTC holds above these key averages, the bullish structure established since August remains intact.

Leverage Flushed, Short Squeeze Fuel Building

The correction has thoroughly liquidated the high-leverage long positions accumulated since August, significantly reducing systemic risk from cascading liquidations. Meanwhile, short positions above the market are expanding aggressively, with the largest cluster of short liquidations concentrated near $87,000 — a level that overlaps with September’s local high. Any rebound could trigger a short squeeze, providing fuel for a move toward that resistance.

The options market paints a structurally bullish picture. Call options total roughly $18 billion versus $13 billion in puts, with the largest year-end calls clustered at $80,000, $90,000, $100,000, and $120,000 strike prices. Protective puts are concentrated at $60,000 and below as tail-risk hedges.

ETF Outflows, But Volume Holds

US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded nearly $1 billion in net outflows over the past two weeks, with daily spot volume holding steady at around $24 billion — still 1.5x the pre-August breakout baseline. The market’s resilience is further underscored by its muted 3% drawdown in response to the $6.3 billion exchange theft, the largest single loss in crypto history.

Bitcoin has also reclaimed parity with the S&P 500, winning 50% of trading days over the past 90 days for the first time since March 2025. Altcoin markets have seen far more brutal capitulation, with short-term holder profitability collapsing from ~80% in late September to just 12%.

Forward Outlook

The critical line in the sand is the $73,000-$76,000 zone, where the short-term holder cost basis, 200-day moving average, and liquidation clusters converge. A hold above this band keeps the August uptrend intact; a break below would signal a longer consolidation phase. With speculative froth cleared and short-squeeze fuel building above, the risk-reward setup looks considerably healthier than September’s frothy peak — provided external capital returns.
