Coinbase Completes AERO and VELO Token Migration, Reopens Deposits and Withdrawals

Coinbase has completed the conversion of Aerodrome (AERO) and Velodrome (VELO) tokens to the new unified AERO token, re-enabling deposits and withdrawals. The exchange warns users not to send old AERO to deposit addresses, as such funds may be lost. The migration consolidates two major ve(3,3) DEXs and could signal further DeFi consolidation.

Coinbase Finalizes AERO and VELO Token Conversion

Coinbase has completed the conversion of Aerodrome Finance (AERO) and Velodrome Finance (VELO) tokens to the new unified AERO token, and has re-enabled deposit and withdrawal functions for both assets. The exchange announced that it no longer supports old AERO deposits and withdrawals, warning users not to send old AERO to their Coinbase deposit addresses, as such deposits may be irrecoverable.

The migration marks a significant step in the consolidation of the two leading ve(3,3) decentralized exchanges on Optimism and Base, which are now unified under the Aerodrome brand. The new AERO token is designed to streamline liquidity and governance across both protocols, which have collectively processed billions in trading volume.

Industry Implications

The token merge reflects a broader trend of consolidation within DeFi, where protocols seek to reduce fragmentation and enhance capital efficiency. By unifying AERO and VELO, the combined entity aims to create a more robust liquidity hub across the Superchain ecosystem. Coinbase’s support for the migration is crucial, as it ensures that users can seamlessly transition their holdings and maintain access to one of the largest exchanges.

However, the warning about old AERO deposits highlights the risks associated with token migrations. Users must remain vigilant and follow official guidelines to avoid losing funds. Exchanges typically set deadlines for supporting old tokens, and failure to migrate can result in permanent loss.

Forward-Looking Perspective

The successful migration could set a precedent for other DeFi protocols considering similar consolidations. As the sector matures, we may see more mergers and acquisitions aimed at creating stronger, more sustainable ecosystems. For Aerodrome, the unified token could attract more liquidity and partnerships, particularly as Base continues to grow as a prominent Layer 2 network.

Investors and users should monitor the new AERO token’s performance and governance developments. The coming months will reveal whether the consolidation delivers the promised efficiencies and whether other exchanges follow Coinbase’s lead in supporting the migration.
