CoinDCX Confirms Enforcement Directorate Visit, Says Operations Normal

India’s largest crypto exchange, CoinDCX, said on Tuesday that personnel from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) visited its Bengaluru office on November 4 as part of a routine investigation. The exchange stated that it fully cooperated with the agency and provided all requested documentation, adding that trading and deposit/withdrawal services remain fully operational.

The visit underscores the heightened scrutiny facing Indian crypto platforms as the ED intensifies its probe into alleged foreign exchange violations and money laundering linked to digital assets. CoinDCX emphasized that the visit was part of a broader inquiry and that no formal charges have been filed against the company.

Regulatory Pressure Mounts in India

India has taken an increasingly tough stance on crypto, imposing a 30% tax on gains and a 1% TDS on transactions since 2022. The ED, which investigates economic offenses under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), has previously raided several exchanges, including WazirX and CoinSwitch Kuber.

The latest action comes amid a global regulatory push for stricter compliance in the crypto sector. Indian authorities have been working to bring virtual digital assets under the anti-money laundering framework, requiring exchanges to conduct enhanced due diligence and report suspicious transactions.

Industry Implications

CoinDCX’s proactive disclosure may help reassure users and investors, but the incident highlights the operational risks for crypto businesses in India. Exchanges face the dual challenge of navigating unclear tax laws and aggressive enforcement actions. The ED’s scrutiny could deter institutional participation and drive innovation offshore.

However, the exchange’s willingness to cooperate and its transparent communication could set a precedent for others. As India prepares to assume the G20 presidency’s crypto agenda, the government is expected to push for a coordinated global regulatory framework, which may eventually provide clarity for domestic players.

Forward Look

CoinDCX’s ability to maintain normal operations during the investigation is a positive sign, but the outcome of the ED probe will be closely watched. If the investigation expands, it could lead to penalties or operational restrictions, impacting the exchange’s growth plans. Investors should monitor regulatory developments, as India’s crypto landscape remains volatile and enforcement actions are likely to continue.
