Standard Chartered Initiates SKY Coverage With $0.325 Target by 2028

Standard Chartered has initiated coverage of Sky's SKY token with a 2028 target of $0.325, roughly five times its reference price. The bank compares the DeFi platform to a wholesale 'federal bank' that issues stablecoins and earns lending spreads, with value returned mainly via staking rewards.

Standard Chartered Bets on Sky’s Tokenized Banking Model

Standard Chartered has initiated coverage of Sky, the decentralized finance platform formerly known as MakerDAO, issuing a 2028 year-end price target of $0.325 for its SKY token — roughly five times the $0.065 reference price cited in the report. The call marks one of the first formal sell-side research notes on a DeFi governance token from a major global bank, a signal that institutional research desks are beginning to treat established protocols as analyzable businesses rather than speculative assets.

The ‘Federal Bank’ Analogy

Geoff Kendrick, the bank’s global head of digital asset research, framed Sky as a kind of on-chain wholesale bank: it issues stablecoins, maintains a governance framework, and earns a spread by charging borrowers wholesale rates. That comparison is not merely rhetorical. Sky’s core business — minting decentralized stablecoins against collateral and deploying the proceeds into yield-bearing instruments — mirrors the asset-liability management of a traditional lender, with the crucial difference that its balance sheet and governance are transparent and programmable.

Scale and Yield Economics

Sky now ranks as the third-largest stablecoin issuer behind Tether and Circle, and the largest issuer of yield-bearing stablecoins. Its sUSDS product holds roughly $4.5 billion in total value locked and offers an annualized yield of about 3.6%. Value accrues to SKY holders primarily through staking rewards, with token buybacks playing a smaller role — a design choice that ties holder returns to protocol revenue rather than to discretionary treasury operations.

  • Staking-first value capture: rewards flow directly to locked tokens, aligning long-term holders with protocol health.
  • Wholesale lending spread: the protocol profits from the gap between borrower rates and deployed collateral yields.
  • Governance moat: a mature, battle-tested framework built over years since the MakerDAO era.

What the Target Implies

A five-fold increase by 2028 assumes steady growth in stablecoin supply, sustained demand for yield-bearing dollar instruments, and a regulatory environment that does not foreclose decentralized issuance. It also implicitly assumes Sky can defend its spread as competition from tokenized money-market funds and bank-issued stablecoins intensifies. The bull case rests on Sky behaving less like a crypto protocol and more like a dividend-paying financial institution — one whose shares happen to settle on a blockchain.

Forward Look

The more consequential story may be the precedent. If major banks begin publishing coverage on DeFi tokens, capital allocation frameworks across traditional finance will slowly adapt to include on-chain cash flows, staking yields, and governance risk. Sky’s trajectory over the next three years will serve as an early test of whether that convergence produces durable valuations — or simply imports equity-market expectations into a market that still lacks the legal and accounting scaffolding of a listed bank.
