JPMorgan: Bitcoin Could Outperform Gold If ETF Hedging Demand Fades

JPMorgan analysts suggest bitcoin could gain relative support if gold ETF hedging demand declines, noting that gold ETFs have fully recovered year-to-date outflows while bitcoin ETFs have recouped only half. Futures positioning shows high institutional participation in both assets, but with different strategic drivers.

Bitcoin’s Relative Support May Strengthen as ETF Flows Normalize

JPMorgan analysts have flagged a potential shift in the relative dynamics between bitcoin and gold, suggesting that bitcoin could find stronger support if hedging demand for gold ETFs begins to fade. The analysis notes that following the Federal Reserve’s late-July meeting, both gold and bitcoin ETFs recorded inflows. However, gold ETFs have now fully recovered their year-to-date outflows, while bitcoin ETFs have recouped only about half.

Futures positioning indicates that institutional participation remains elevated across both asset classes, though the composition of that participation differs. Gold’s recovery has been driven in part by macro hedging demand amid persistent inflation uncertainty and geopolitical risk. Bitcoin’s partial recovery, by contrast, reflects a more cautious institutional stance, with many allocators still treating the asset as a high-beta risk proxy rather than a portfolio hedge.

Why the Asymmetry Matters

The divergence in ETF flow recovery is significant for several reasons:

  • Hedging demand concentration: Gold’s outperformance in recovering flows suggests that much of the recent institutional demand has been defensive. If macro conditions stabilize—or if investors rotate out of defensive positioning—gold could see outflows reverse, while bitcoin’s more muted recovery leaves room for upside.
  • Institutional positioning: Futures data shows that institutions are engaged in both markets, but bitcoin’s open interest is more skewed toward directional and basis-trade strategies, whereas gold’s is tied to macro hedging. A decline in hedging demand could therefore disproportionately benefit bitcoin’s relative valuation.
  • Flow sensitivity: Bitcoin ETFs have shown greater sensitivity to price momentum and risk sentiment. As flows normalize, the asset’s lower recovery base could translate into stronger percentage inflows if sentiment improves.

Broader Implications for Digital Assets

The analysis arrives at a pivotal moment for crypto markets. Spot bitcoin ETFs have become a primary channel for institutional exposure, and their flow patterns are increasingly watched as a barometer of broader sentiment. If JPMorgan’s thesis holds, bitcoin could benefit from a rotation out of defensive macro trades—particularly if the Fed signals a clearer path on rates or if geopolitical tensions ease.

Conversely, a sustained risk-off environment would likely keep gold in favor, leaving bitcoin ETFs to continue their slower recovery. The key variable is whether institutional allocators begin to view bitcoin as a complementary hedge rather than a pure risk asset. That shift would require deeper liquidity, more mature derivatives markets, and clearer regulatory frameworks—all of which are evolving but not yet fully in place.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Investors should monitor three signals in the coming months: the pace of bitcoin ETF inflows relative to gold, changes in futures open interest composition, and macro indicators that influence hedging demand. If hedging flows into gold cool while bitcoin ETF inflows accelerate, the relative support thesis could gain traction. For now, the data suggests a market in transition—one where bitcoin’s institutional story is still being written, and where its relationship with gold remains more competitive than complementary.
