MemeCore Leads Top-100 Crypto Gainers as Layer-2 Tokens Slide

MemeCore jumped 15.98% to lead top-100 crypto gainers, while Morpho fell 5.93% and layer-2 tokens like Arbitrum and Starknet extended losses. The divergence reflects a market rotation toward meme coins and select DeFi assets amid persistent weakness in scaling infrastructure.

MemeCore Surges 16% While Morpho and Layer-2 Tokens Retreat

MemeCore (M) surged 15.98% to $0.7835, leading gains among the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization on October 20, while Morpho (MORPHO) fell 5.93% to $2.38. The mixed performance highlights a rotation within the crypto market, with speculative meme coins and select DeFi tokens attracting bids while infrastructure and scaling projects faced selling pressure.

Aerodrome Finance (AERO) rose 11.56% to $0.8616, Worldcoin (WLD) climbed 11.01% to $0.5634, Pepe (PEPE) added 8.67% to $0.000004482, and Venice Token (VVV) gained 6.58% to $25.16. On the downside, Stacks (STX) dropped 5.30% to $0.3403, Arbitrum (ARB) fell 4.76% to $0.1873, Starknet (STRK) declined 2.60% to $0.05514, and NEAR Protocol (NEAR) slipped 2.34% to $4.79.

Market Rotation Favors Meme Coins and Select DeFi

The divergence suggests investors are rotating toward higher-beta, community-driven assets while reducing exposure to layer-2 scaling solutions and lending protocols. MemeCore’s double-digit gain stands out as part of a broader meme coin resurgence, with Pepe also posting strong gains. Aerodrome’s rise reflects continued interest in decentralized exchange (DEX) governance tokens, particularly on Coinbase’s Base network, where Aerodrome is a leading liquidity venue.

Worldcoin’s advance comes amid ongoing developments around its identity and payments infrastructure, though the token remains well below its 2024 highs. Venice Token’s gain extends a rally in AI-adjacent crypto assets, even as the broader AI token sector shows mixed performance.

Layer-2 Tokens Under Pressure

The declines in Arbitrum, Starknet, and Stacks point to persistent weakness in Ethereum scaling and Bitcoin layer-2 narratives. Arbitrum’s drop to $0.1873 marks a significant retreat from its 2023 highs, as competition among layer-2 networks intensifies and fee revenue remains under pressure. Stacks, which brings smart contracts to Bitcoin, has struggled to sustain momentum despite the growing Bitcoin DeFi narrative.

Morpho’s 5.93% decline is notable given the protocol’s position as a leading lending optimizer. The drop may reflect profit-taking after recent gains or concerns about lending market dynamics as interest rates fluctuate.

Forward-Looking Perspective

The rotation underscores a market still driven by sentiment and narrative rather than fundamentals. Meme coins and select DeFi tokens are benefiting from speculative flows, while infrastructure projects face headwinds from competition and token supply overhang. Investors should watch for sustained volume in the gainers to confirm whether this is a short-term bounce or the start of a new trend. For layer-2 tokens, upcoming network upgrades and fee market changes could provide catalysts, but near-term pressure may persist.
