Edel Expands Institutional Tokenization Push on Canton as Wall Street Goes Onchain

Edel is expanding its institutional tokenized equity and commodity markets on Canton, led by prime brokerage veteran Brad Klaas. The move lands as Wall Street's largest firms accelerate their migration of assets onchain, raising the stakes in the race to become the settlement layer for tokenized securities.

Edel Deepens Institutional Bet on Tokenized Equity and Commodities

Edel has announced an expanded institutional push for its tokenized equity and commodity markets built on Canton, the privacy-focused blockchain network designed for regulated financial institutions. The effort is being led by board member Brad Klaas, a securities lending and prime brokerage veteran whose career spans BlackRock’s predecessor firms and Franklin Templeton — a résumé that signals the company is courting the exact desks that control trillions in balance-sheet assets.

The timing is notable. Tokenized Treasuries, money market funds, and private credit have moved from pilot programs to production rails over the past two years, and the largest custodians, asset managers, and exchanges are now competing to become the settlement layer of choice for onchain securities.

Why Canton, and Why Now

Canton’s architecture is built around selective disclosure — counterparties can see only the data relevant to their leg of a transaction. That design is a direct answer to the biggest institutional objection to public blockchains: that competitors would be able to inspect positions, collateral, and trading flow in real time.

  • Privacy meets compliance: Canton allows institutions to satisfy reporting and surveillance obligations without broadcasting sensitive books to the entire market.
  • Securities lending is the wedge: Klaas’s background suggests Edel is targeting repo, collateral mobility, and securities finance — the highest-volume, lowest-margin activities where tokenization delivers the clearest operational savings.
  • Commodities broaden the thesis: Extending beyond equities into commodities moves the platform closer to a full multi-asset tokenization venue rather than a single-product experiment.

The Competitive Landscape

Edel is not operating in a vacuum. Tokenized fund platforms, bank-led settlement networks, and exchange-backed tokenization arms are all racing for the same institutional wallet. Differentiation will come down to three things: which asset managers list products on the venue, whether the legal wrapper is enforceable in major jurisdictions, and whether settlement finality is recognized by custodians and prime brokers.

Hiring a prime brokerage operator as the public face of the push is a tell. Institutions do not adopt new market infrastructure because the technology is elegant; they adopt it when the financing, lending, and collateral workflows they already run become cheaper and faster.

Forward-Looking Perspective

The next 12 to 18 months will likely determine whether tokenized equities and commodities follow the path of tokenized Treasuries — steady, compliance-first institutional adoption — or stall in pilot purgatory. Watch for three signals: named asset managers committing inventory, integration with existing collateral management systems, and regulatory clarity on how tokenized securities are treated in cross-border settlement. If Edel can convert Klaas’s relationships into live order flow, Canton could emerge as a genuine institutional settlement venue rather than another chain with a tokenization narrative.
