ChinaAMC (HK) Completes First HKD Stablecoin Fund Subscription with Standard Chartered and OSL

ChinaAMC (Hong Kong), Standard Chartered and OSL have completed Hong Kong's first HKD stablecoin subscription and redemption of a digital asset fund using HKDAP. The transaction signals that regulated stablecoins are moving from pilot programs into real asset management workflows, with implications for tokenized fund distribution across Asia.

Hong Kong’s Stablecoin Era Moves from Regulation to Real Transactions

ChinaAMC (Hong Kong), together with Standard Chartered and OSL Group, has completed Hong Kong’s first investment use case for a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin. Through an OSL HK trading account, the asset manager used HKDAP — a HKD-pegged stablecoin — to subscribe to and redeem units of its digital asset market fund, marking the first time a stablecoin has been used end-to-end for fund subscription and redemption in the city.

The transaction is notable less for its size than for what it proves: that a regulated stablecoin can function as a settlement rail inside a traditional asset management workflow. Standard Chartered provided the banking infrastructure, OSL supplied the licensed trading venue, and ChinaAMC (HK) acted as the fund manager. Each leg sits within Hong Kong’s existing licensing perimeter.

Why This Matters for Tokenized Fund Distribution

Hong Kong has spent the past two years building a regulatory framework for stablecoins and virtual asset trading platforms. The missing piece has been actual commercial usage. Fund subscription and redemption is a high-value test case because it touches cash settlement, custody, compliance and investor onboarding simultaneously.

  • Cash leg innovation: Stablecoins can compress settlement from T+2 to near-instant, freeing working capital for fund managers and distributors.
  • Distribution channel: Licensed VATP accounts become a new subscription channel for traditional funds, widening the investor base beyond banks and brokers.
  • Composability: Once fund units and cash are both tokenized, secondary transfers, collateralization and DeFi integration become technically feasible.

The Competitive Landscape

The move places Hong Kong in direct conversation with Singapore, the UAE and Switzerland, all of which are courting tokenized fund structures. Global asset managers including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton and Fidelity have launched or backed tokenized money market funds, but most settle in US dollar stablecoins or tokenized deposits. A HKD-denominated rail is a distinct bet on local currency demand and on Hong Kong’s role as an offshore RMB and regional wealth hub.

Forward-Looking View

The next milestones to watch are whether HKDAP gains broader issuer and exchange support, whether the HKMA’s stablecoin licensing regime admits additional issuers at scale, and whether tokenized fund units themselves become transferable outside the original distributor. If those three conditions align, Hong Kong could move from pilot transactions to a genuine tokenized asset distribution market — one where stablecoins are not a crypto curiosity but the default cash leg for fund flows.
