70% of Binance Altcoins Reclaim 200-Day Average, Yet Altcoin Season Index Falls to 41

Over 70% of Binance-listed altcoins have reclaimed their 200-day moving average, signaling improving market structure. However, the Altcoin Season Index fell to 41, well below the 75 threshold that confirms a true altcoin season, indicating Bitcoin is still capturing most capital flows.

A Technical Recovery Masking a Broader Rotation

More than 70% of altcoins listed on Binance have climbed back above their 200-day moving average, a level widely watched as the dividing line between long-term bullish and bearish structure. On the surface, the breadth metric suggests the altcoin complex is healing after months of range-bound price action. But a separate gauge of altcoin strength has moved in the opposite direction, complicating the narrative that capital is rotating out of Bitcoin and into higher-beta tokens.

The Altcoin Season Index, which compares the 90-day performance of the top 50 altcoins against Bitcoin, fell to 41 on September 20. Readings above 75 are conventionally treated as confirmation of a full-blown altcoin season, meaning the current print sits roughly 34 points below that threshold. In other words, the majority of altcoins may be above their long-term trendline, but they are still underperforming Bitcoin on a relative basis.

Why the Two Signals Diverge

The divergence is less contradictory than it appears. The 200-day moving average is an absolute measure — it tells you whether a token is trading above where it averaged over the past 200 days, regardless of what Bitcoin is doing. The Altcoin Season Index is a relative measure, tracking whether altcoins are outperforming the market leader. A broad-based recovery from deeply depressed levels can lift many tokens above their 200-day averages while Bitcoin simultaneously rips higher and keeps the relative index suppressed.

  • Absolute strength: 70%+ of Binance-listed altcoins above the 200-day MA signals improving market structure and less downside momentum.
  • Relative weakness: An Altcoin Season Index at 41 shows Bitcoin still absorbing the bulk of incremental capital.
  • Implication: Selectivity matters more than beta — a rising tide is not lifting all boats equally.

What This Means for Positioning

For traders, the setup argues against blanket altcoin exposure and in favor of sector-specific bets. Capital has been concentrated in narratives with clear catalysts — tokenization infrastructure, DeFi protocols with real fee revenue, and assets tied to regulatory clarity. Tokens without a differentiated thesis have participated in the bounce off lows but have not broken out relative to Bitcoin.

The 200-day recovery does, however, reduce the risk of a cascading drawdown. When the majority of the market sits above its long-term trend, forced selling tends to be shallower and dip-buyers are more confident. That creates a more constructive backdrop for idiosyncratic catalysts to be rewarded.

Forward Outlook

The key question is whether the Altcoin Season Index can close the gap. Historically, sustained altcoin seasons require Bitcoin to consolidate or trade sideways long enough for liquidity to spill into smaller caps. If Bitcoin continues to dominate on strength rather than stagnation, the index may stay depressed even as more tokens reclaim their 200-day averages. A decisive move above 75 on the index would be the clearest confirmation that a genuine rotation is underway — until then, the recovery remains real but narrow.
