China’s Zhoushan island microgrid keeps power stable during 9-day substation overhaul

The significance here is less the overhaul itself than the demonstration that islanded, source-grid-load-storage microgrids can carry real load through planned outages rather than only emergency islanding. It matters most for remote coastal and island communities where the mainland grid is a single point of failure, and for the vendors and utilities building comparable systems. The open question is whether this model spreads beyond pilot islands and how diesel dependence is managed as solar and storage scale.
