Bitwise’s NEAR Spot ETF Cleared for NYSE Arca Listing
TREE NEWS reports: NYSE Arca has approved the listing of Bitwise’s NEAR Protocol spot ETF under the ticker “NRR,” marking the first U.S. spot ETF tied directly to NEAR. The fund carries a 0.75% management fee, with Coinbase Custody serving as custodian and staking the underlying NEAR tokens. A listing date has not yet been announced, but the approval alone moved NEAR toward the $5 mark.
From Trust to ETF: A Structural Shift in Access
Until now, U.S. investors seeking regulated NEAR exposure have relied primarily on the Grayscale NEAR Trust, which trades over the counter and often at premiums or discounts to net asset value. A spot ETF changes that dynamic materially:
- Continuous pricing: Exchange-listed shares track NAV far more tightly than OTC trust vehicles.
- Broader distribution: ETF shares can be bought through standard brokerage accounts, including retirement accounts.
- Staking yield: Coinbase Custody’s staking arrangement means the fund can potentially pass staking rewards to shareholders, a feature that distinguishes it from passive commodity-style crypto ETFs.
The 0.75% fee is competitive relative to early spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, though it remains a meaningful drag for a token whose value proposition includes staking returns. The net cost to investors will depend on how much of the staking yield is retained by the fund versus passed through.
Why NEAR, and Why Now
NEAR has positioned itself as a high-throughput, developer-friendly Layer 1 with a focus on chain abstraction and AI-adjacent use cases. Its sharded architecture and low transaction costs have kept it relevant in a market increasingly dominated by Ethereum L2s and Solana. An ETF approval signals that regulators and exchanges are growing more comfortable with a wider set of Layer 1 assets beyond the two market leaders.
The move also reflects a broader trend: asset managers are racing to build ETF products around altcoins with sufficient liquidity, institutional-grade custody, and a credible staking mechanism. Bitwise has been among the most aggressive in this regard, and the NEAR approval could serve as a template for other mid-cap L1 tokens.
Forward-Looking Perspective
The immediate question is timing. Approval does not guarantee a launch date, and market conditions will influence how quickly NRR begins trading. The larger question is flow. Spot crypto ETFs have demonstrated the ability to attract billions in assets, but those flows have concentrated heavily in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Whether NEAR can capture meaningful institutional demand depends on whether allocators view it as a distinct portfolio holding or simply as a higher-beta proxy for the sector.
If NRR launches successfully, expect pressure on other Layer 1 projects to secure similar vehicles — and expect the SEC and exchanges to face renewed questions about where the line is drawn between commodity-like tokens and those still treated as securities. For now, the approval is a clear win for NEAR’s institutional narrative and a signal that the altcoin ETF era is moving beyond the two largest assets.
