Bitget Hack: On-Chain Analysis Traces $350M Across Multiple Chains

Bitget suffered a hot wallet breach on September 24, 2026, with losses exceeding $350 million across multiple blockchains. On-chain analysis by Beosin shows funds were rapidly dispersed, bridged, and mixed. The incident highlights ongoing security gaps and may trigger tougher regulatory scrutiny on exchange custody and cross-chain bridges.

Bitget Hot Wallet Breach Drains Over $350 Million

On September 24, 2026, a security incident struck cryptocurrency exchange Bitget when attackers compromised a hot wallet, siphoning funds across multiple major blockchain networks. Total losses are estimated to exceed $350 million, making it one of the largest exchange breaches of the year.

On-Chain Forensics Reveal Multi-Chain Laundering Path

Blockchain security firm Beosin conducted a detailed analysis of the stolen funds’ movement. The attacker employed a familiar playbook: rapid dispersion of assets into hundreds of intermediary wallets, followed by swaps into privacy-oriented assets and bridges to obscure the trail.

The stolen assets reportedly included ETH, USDT, USDC, and several wrapped tokens. A significant portion was bridged from Ethereum to BNB Chain and Arbitrum within hours, while some funds were routed through decentralized exchanges (DEXs) to convert into ETH and then tumbled via mixers.

  • Initial dispersion: Funds moved to over 200 fresh addresses within the first hour.
  • Cross-chain hops: Bridges including Stargate and Across were used to move value between Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Arbitrum.
  • Privacy tools: A portion of ETH was deposited into Tornado Cash-like mixers, complicating tracing.

Industry Implications: Security and Regulation Under Scrutiny

This breach underscores persistent vulnerabilities in exchange hot wallet management, even as cold storage and multi-signature solutions become standard. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of cross-chain bridge security and the role of decentralized infrastructure in facilitating illicit finance.

Regulators may intensify scrutiny on exchanges’ custody practices, particularly in jurisdictions with emerging MiCA-like frameworks. Meanwhile, DeFi protocols that inadvertently processed stolen funds could face compliance risks and reputational damage.

Forward Look: Resilience and Recovery

Bitget has pledged to cover user losses from its insurance fund and is cooperating with law enforcement and on-chain analysts. The incident is likely to accelerate adoption of real-time threat detection, zero-knowledge proofs for reserve attestation, and stricter KYC/AML at fiat on-ramps.

As the industry matures, the ability to trace and freeze stolen assets across chains will be a key test for the crypto ecosystem’s collective security posture.
