Crypto PACs Pour $11.4M Into Ohio Senate Race to Block Sherrod Brown’s Return

Fairshake-affiliated Defend American Jobs PAC has spent $11.4 million in Ohio's Senate race to support Republican Jon Husted and block Democrat Sherrod Brown, a leading crypto skeptic, from returning to the Senate Banking Committee chair. The spending is part of a $30 million commitment, echoing the industry's $41 million Ohio effort in 2024.

Crypto Industry Escalates Political Spending in Ohio

Defend American Jobs PAC, an affiliate of the Coinbase- and Ripple-backed Fairshake network, has spent $11.4 million in the Ohio Senate race, funding media advertisements supporting Republican candidate Jon Husted and opposing a potential comeback by Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown. The expenditure forms part of an initial $30 million commitment aimed squarely at preventing Brown from reclaiming the Senate Banking Committee chairmanship.

Why Ohio Matters to Crypto Policy

Brown, who previously chaired the Banking Committee, has been one of Congress’s most vocal skeptics of digital assets, consistently resisting market-structure legislation and stablecoin frameworks favored by the industry. Husted, by contrast, has taken a comparatively moderate stance on crypto regulation. The race has therefore become a proxy battle over who controls the legislative agenda for digital assets in the next Congress.

The scale of spending reflects how seriously the industry views the Banking Committee gavel. Control of that committee determines which bills reach the floor, how aggressively regulators like the SEC and CFTC are overseen, and whether comprehensive market-structure rules advance or stall.

A Repeat of 2024 — At a Fraction of the Cost

This is not Ohio’s first crypto-funded showdown. During the 2024 cycle, external groups spent more than $300 million in the Brown–Bernie Moreno contest, with crypto-aligned PACs and affiliates alone accounting for roughly $41 million opposing Brown and backing Moreno. Moreno ultimately won with 50.2% of the vote — a result the industry has cited as proof that crypto-focused spending can move Senate races.

  • 2024 cycle: ~$41M in crypto PAC spending in Ohio
  • Current cycle: $11.4M committed so far, part of a $30M pledge
  • Target: prevent Brown from returning to the Banking Committee chair

Implications for Digital Asset Legislation

The spending signals that Fairshake and its affiliates intend to remain a permanent fixture in US elections, not a one-cycle phenomenon. For policymakers, it raises uncomfortable questions about the influence of industry money over financial regulation. For the crypto sector, it represents a bet that legislative clarity — on token classification, stablecoins, and exchange oversight — is worth nine figures of political investment.

What to Watch

Whether the ads succeed will depend on Ohio voters’ priorities, which may be dominated by economic and social issues rather than crypto policy. Still, the outcome will shape the composition of the Senate Banking Committee and, by extension, the pace of US crypto rulemaking through 2026 and beyond. If Brown stays out and Husted wins, the industry gains a friendlier committee; if Brown returns, the $30 million pledge may only be the opening bid.
