Yuga Labs Co-Founder and Pranksy Clash Over BAYC’s Lost $500M Valuation

Yuga Labs co-founder Greg Solano has publicly criticized NFT collector Pranksy for selling BAYC assets that could have been worth $500 million for a fraction of that, and for backing inferior copycat projects. The spat highlights tensions over valuation, stewardship, and brand strategy in the blue-chip NFT market.

A Public Spat Exposes Deeper Rifts in the NFT Market

Yuga Labs co-founder Greg Solano, known on-chain as Garga.eth, has publicly rebuked prominent NFT collector Pranksy, accusing him of selling Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) assets that could have been worth up to $500 million for just a few million dollars, and of subsequently endorsing low-quality copycat projects. The exchange, which unfolded across social media, has reignited debate over value creation, stewardship, and the strategic direction of blue-chip NFT brands.

The Core of the Dispute

At its heart, the conflict is about opportunity cost and community alignment. Solano’s argument suggests that Pranksy, as one of the largest early holders, disposed of a significant portion of his BAYC holdings near the market’s early stages, foregoing what would later become a multi-hundred-million-dollar position. Solano further alleges that Pranksy then lent his credibility to derivative or imitation collections, potentially diluting the cultural and economic moat of the original BAYC ecosystem.

Pranksy has not remained silent, and the back-and-forth highlights a classic tension in crypto: early adopters who prioritize short-term liquidity versus founders who envision long-term brand equity.

Industry Implications: Blue-Chip NFTs Under Pressure

This dispute is more than a personality clash. It underscores several structural challenges facing the NFT sector:

  • Valuation Volatility: The $500 million figure is a stark reminder of how quickly NFT portfolios can appreciate—and depreciate. BAYC’s floor price has fallen dramatically from its 2022 peak, forcing a re-evaluation of what ‘blue-chip’ means in a speculative market.
  • Governance and Stewardship: Founders increasingly expect large holders to act as brand ambassadors. When they don’t, public criticism can erode community trust.
  • Copycat Dilemma: Endorsing derivative projects can fragment liquidity and attention, weakening the original collection’s network effects.

Forward-Looking Perspective

As the NFT market matures, the relationship between creators and collectors will need clearer norms. Yuga Labs is pivoting toward broader metaverse and gaming initiatives, including Otherside, which may reduce its reliance on BAYC’s trading royalties. Meanwhile, collectors like Pranksy represent a class of professional traders whose incentives are often misaligned with long-term brand building.

Investors should watch for two signals: whether Yuga can successfully diversify revenue beyond NFT royalties, and whether large holders begin to coordinate more formally to protect collection value. Without such alignment, the next bull market may favor new models of digital ownership that better balance creator and collector interests.
